The inside of the furnace would show a color change on the rocks if there had been a high temperature, especially at the top go look BA ya never know.

400 years of sand blasting by the wind would erase much of that coating and creosote. I'd bet it's a smelter or kiln for smelting.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Being that small I'm betting on GD's Thing.   Adobe Covered Bee Hive Kiln.

I was not joking about Sleeping in structures like that.    Done it more then a few times.   The Indians would do a Carn like structures to loose the Sun and Winds.   A pocket size fire would keep you warm.

Here in the High Desert it can be 96f in the day time and Drop to 40f in the mornings .

The biggest challenge with determining whether the structures where used as ovens, smelters, or some other form of heat containment unit is that the whole area has been subject to some pretty intense fires over the years including last year's Gladiator fire which was one of the largest in the state.    Made for easier detecting since we didn't have to worry about all the undergrowth, but when you literally have ash and burn marks everywhere....

The smelter idea does make a lot of sense, especially if it was a relatively small operation not related to the bigger mines up the hill.   I did not see any signs of a stamp mill, but some of the smaller ones were fairly mobile, so it could have been moved off-site.

I moving to your area   Smiley .....While it doesn't get nearly as hot where these are at as it does down in Phoenix, it still gets well over 100f for days at a time (and yeah, it does drop WAY down once the sun goes down).

Over 113F /45C is hot no matter how you cut it.    Most of my life has been spent in areas where the summer temps regularly get over 100F, and I've been living here in the Valley of the Sun for 16 years now.   I'm still not used to 113F+ blast furnace we get nearly every summer.

Angry hate that heat when it get 32c I start to moan like an old lady  Grin and then on the other hand I hate the cold too but at least when it's cold you can dress up. Now about that furnace I think that you're going to have to do like the myth busters, see of GD is right  Cheesy

Yeah, it's on the list.....of course, I can only do it on the weekends, but at least it's a bit cooler up there.
And while I'm up there, I'll keep an eye out for strange signs (like these taken from another site) carved into the rocks

I am having second thoughts. Undecided
The curving in the middle of the picture looks like the blue print of the stone hut.
How far is the drawing from the hut?
I totally understand if you don’t want to reveal this info.
I am just curious
