I'm looking for a map program to document my finds.  Not necessarily treasures, but historical stuff like old foundations, mill sites and other stuff of interest (that may one day lead to treasure Wink).  It would be nice if it interfaced with gps.  I would also like to be able to attach photos to waypoints like Google maps.  I've thought about using google maps or google earth, but don't really want to have all my info tied to an internet based program and be tied to them as far as updates and stuff.  Does anyone know of a good program, or am I just being stubborn by not using google?  Thanks, Jake
Anyone?

Both DeLorme and National Geographic have Topographical map software that will let you do this.   To get down to the level of detail you'll probably to purchase the individual states.  Fortunately, you can buy the states as you need them (otherwise, it gets kind of expensive).

I do use Google Earth for that and yeah it can suck if you lose your local data. However it is free and works well as long as I maintain a backup of my data. The resolution could be better, but again free. The interface is easy to use and lets me add a lot of data to points.

I believe Magellan and some of the other gps manufacturers use the Nat Geographic and have an interface to save data, waypoints and such your pc. I have a magellon but I havent sprung for the maps I want yet. As BA says they get kinda spendy if you need many, but probably the better option if you can afford it. If you are in the woods with your laptop it still works where as GE wont in most cases unless your wireless internet connection is more uber than mine Smiley

There is also terraserver.com but again another internet based software.

Csharp,  thanks...I've been looking for something like that for a while (if only because it's nearly impossible to map a really small site accurately using commercial maps)---and I doubt if I'm the only one with the need/desire to map a 5 acre or less site.

Thanks BA and csharp.  I downloaded the map maker and am reading the manual.  I think I may purchase the delorme software, but would have to change my gps to use them together.  It looks like cool software and the $30 yearly subscription to maps may make the whole deal.  I'm going to check out the Nat geo software also.  I will do a review once I figure out which one will work better for me.

Smiley Hi,

I have the National Geographic map software, it works great, the only problem it will not interface with my magellan GPS. I have to manually download or upload the locations, otherwise for my use it can be filled or saved a lot better than Google Earth.

Later,
Roadlizzard

Hello, just wanted to thank you for the excellent tip on the map maker site,
a wonderful product!
Does google earth have a feature that will show a time line backwards to see the changes to an area to help research an area to help?
I know it has a streetview  - it took a great shot of of someones cat < in a window and of people with missing parts  <I;ll leave you with that one to figure out yourself!?!> LOL
Did mapmaker help in finding something good?

thanks  good hunting'
Jason

Yes.  You can choose "View" from the pull down menu. Then choose "Historical Imagery" or Choose the "Clock" icon on the menu bar.
