Casca, they concluded these dated  back 1100-1400 years ago, from specific markings of petroglyphs of a  "basket maker" site. They are very old, and therefore are most likely not directly spanish related. There may or may not be similiar markings that are possibly treasure related. These are photographed, categorized, specific, and are not directly treasure related.

Hi Ris,

How did they date it. Just because of the site? Or did they have a method that tells them when the symbol was carved/ground into that rock. I ask this as the marks look very fresh.

I was detecting what I believed to be a old campground. I get a good signal and no low iron sound either. I start digging and out pops someones trash.

Now I had to drive several miles off little more than a animal trail. Then walk the last 1/2 mile in. I didnt go in far enough and I was very surprised to see modern trash there. There are some old carvings and scratchings and such close by so I figure this is a popular spot for people who like to look at old stuff.

So my question is, whats is to stop a guy from carving a symbol like that? What would he need? Also that one sure was pretty and crisp. What if he is using a old technique to bury a modern cache?

We have Garmin now, but 20 years ago?

Please forgive my way of thinking. People are out looking for old signs that have been published 50 years or more. To me that means the treasure has already been found. We need to look for the new signs and trails.  Works for me anyway.

I like the Spanish stuff so along with a few other topics here, I always am all ears.

If this sign does really go back that far, I have a good idea of what it is.

 Hi all

i checked out the link Ris had, perhaps I didn't look for long enough because I didn't find any proof of what the sign was supposed to be for   ?
From Ris last post it could be close to 1000 years old. Perhaps Ris or another member could give a summary of what they think these signs are and who is supposed to have made them.

Amateur archaeologists Robert Ford and Dixon Spendlove assert that the symbols were used by the Ancient Pueblo peoples to mark water sources in the desert. They assert that a high percentage of these symbols indicates line-of-sight directions to finding a natural spring, water pocket or pool, or ancient village site. They hypothesize that the symbols could be followed, from one water source to the next, across the entire Arizona Strip

We have water marks like that just a few miles from my home.

Must had been a South West thing.

Yea pretty much a SW thing but I have heard of water sign in Mexico and as for north as Utah. The thing is its been proven to not be a treasure sign.

Thats good info as I didnt believe in water glyphs. I was hoping the marks were newer and another explanation existed. Im very interested in any pictures Homefire has as he live to the west of me and I consider that a part of a old trail.

Just out of Deming, HY-26 is a rock shop.

Head North and you will find a outcrop of rocks that  is loaded with that stuff.
