Gozzo,

Your tail-fin is from an 84mm illumination round.

Back in the 80's we cut through a live firing range one night on exercise, as a short cut. We knew when the firing was to start and had enough time to be well out out of the firing area before the fun started so we were safe. Anyhow they would be firing .50 cal spotter tracer and .106mm anti-tank and as everyone knows it is easy to dodge the big rounds! We crossed the range in darkness and I mean pitch black no moon just a few stars peeking through the clouds, on the other side of the range we did a head count to find that we were one digger short. As I was acting 2IC I had to go back and find him, which I did about 75 meters onto the range and heading in the wrong direction (toward the firing line), he had no excuse as to why he had stepped out of line and ducked out of sight.

The corporal came over and lit us up with a red filtered-right angle-torch (flashlight for you yanks) and started to tear strips off of me for loosing a digger then I saw a shape sticking from the dozy diggers pack. What did you pick up. The torch is now on the digger, "Nothing" was the reply, BS I turned him round and there is a fin sticking out of his pack. So the idea is pack off take out the blind and throw it away then bug out. The corporal takes out the blind, it is longer than anything I have seen before and covered in mud and clay, as the corporal heaves it away the mud flies off and the contents starts to come out. It was a WP round and now brilliant beads of burning white phosphorous fly through the air, the blind hits the ground and more WP comes out and ignites.

We grab our kit and bug out for the road, now this did not go unnoticed and the vehicles waiting on the firing line go to white light but some had been using IR and we were seen, but at the distance on one knew it was us. Later than night the digger had his hands taped to his weapon and stayed like that for the next day or two and it was not the first time he copped that punishment.

Lol hope he learnt his lesson, yea a live firing range is not somewhere to grab souviners, as a kid we had one not far from my home and me and my mates used to always think how cool it would be to take home a " Prize " Long story short we were chased many many times and all but once managed to evade capture. Then one day we found out that when escaping from the same guys again and again one shouldn't use the same escape route repetadly lol. As a punishment we were made do a lot of community service which mostly consisted of picking up rubbish and mowing lawns for old ladies. But the best part of getting caught was we were taken and shown the Howitzer fire an HE round. and it cured us of ever going back. Until you see one of those babies go off you just cant appreciate what it can do.

Specificity is often a BAD idea on public forums for a variety of reasons, I think the trend of banning practices or activities is largely do to the fact that the people making these recommendations are not intellectually creative enough to come up with other solutions. Instead of penalizing people for uncovering historically important objects why not try to ENCOURAGE it, with one caveat that the finds be given back to the State IF they are found on State land in exchange for compensatory value to the finder and recognition that they found it. To me that sounds like a reasonable way to both discover new history and be fairly compensated for the effort without the loss of the historical significance of the discovery. I'm sure many people will disagree so feel free to respond... debate leads to answers (except in politics)!  Beer Chug

Many of us choose to stay sort of anonymous. I know, with a bit of digging, you can find out who I really am but there's no real need. I have nothing to hide from authority but a lot to hide from the casual user here. There's nothing personal about it, either. It's just practicality in action. I don't want anyone who is uninvited to show up on my doorstep or my dogs might have a special treat that day.

I hope that your dogs do not eat any police officers, or off to jail you will go. Smiley

I have many times posted the exact location of sites that I detect and have produced high yields only to be hunted over and over again by someone else.
When I find a honey hole I keep it secret until I have really hunted it for at least 4-5 times and I know it will take about a few years before it is reseeded.
I don't want to be greedy, but if everyone hits your favorite sites because you told them where it is, then you'll be caught with nowhere to go that you know will yield high totals or great finds.

Exactly it's your close friends not a forum that you really have to worry about.
