I got permission to detect an old house site and field yesterday. It looked great from the road. I went ther this morning to give it a try. WhenI got to the house , it is surrounded bygreen sedge grass and briars that stand over knee high. The field is bushogged but the stubble is 5-6" high. Swinging the coil is a challenge. I think there could be some finds around the house but you can only place your coil straight down into the grass but can't swing. Any tips?

Bring a gas powered weed whacker next time. Clear out a 10x10 area, detect, do another patch, detect, repeat as necessary.

I use a loop support which helps me in tall grass.  It still takes a little muscle but it at least my coil stays where I want it to.  The next tip you can do at your own risk... I recently worked some overgrown grass as well. I found walking backwards (slowly) pushes the grass down a bit and allows you to get a little better swing. You still don't get a full swing but it helped me out.  The grass I was in wasn't super thick, just tall.  Again, try that one at your own risk, walking backwards in tall grass can be dangerous.  Wink

Seldom, it also gives you a beautiful indication of where you've already been so you don't do too much retracing of steps.

Mowing would be the quick and best way in my book.   It has a Plus showing your a good Ambassador of the Hobby as well.    Some folks just wait until the winter die off happens.

I have reservations about mowing because the land is not in use. There might be damaging things on the ground. Weed whacker is better.

The easist way is to ground balance your machine about 6" off the ground and shorten the shaft and turn the power right up so it will see deeper and slow down your sweep speed so it give the detector a chance to see the return signals, I use this trick when I have a coil which is big and theres too much Iron in the ground,

Hope this helps, try and see how you get on,

RR

hello, i agree with golddigger1950, or you could ask the owners if they would like there grass, and weed's cut in return for detecting the property. if it's a really old place it might be worth the work as thats where many caches have been found burried. keep in mind that cranking the machine up all the way is not always the best way to go. keeping the coil close to the ground is key. you never know you might find that jar of silver coins grandpa burried to keep away from the ol taxman way back when. keep us posted as to what you find, have fun, and may the good luck be with ya. ben..

You have received great advice here, DS.  Nothing I can really add.  Good luck on your search of the house grounds!    Detecting
