So I spent an extra $7 when ordering the gold bug to have a coil cover.  Really?  Am I going to wear out a coil?  Is that possible?  The cover for the BH is almost $15.  So I started thinking.  Why not spray the coil myself with an epoxy paint or something?  Of course you'd have to check to ingredients out first, but they say adding an extra plastic cover will protect the coil and not affect the coil sensitivity.  So why not do it ourselves?   I can buy a can of paint for $3 and coat alot of coils.  Anybody ever try?

Hi

Coil covers are very important - don't leave home without them.

seriously, they protect the base of the coil from over knocking and dampness, scuffing.

i use covers and wear them out, I have worn through 3 covers in 5 years.

this is why they make them.

regards

CS

Gidday
as Csharp says the covers are to protect the bottom of your coil from wearing or splitting,
this allows moisture and dirt into the coilthis will wreck your coil in no time. Better the price of a cover than replacing the coil

I strongly believe coil covers are a good investment also. But remember to carefully pop them off and give a good rinse after each hunt to remove any debris that might interfere with ground balancing.

Ok.....protecting the coil is the smart thing to do and a coil cover is a relatively cheap way of doing that (at least compared to the cost of a new coil).   However, do it yourself is not out of the question.   GD uses the stuff you dip tools in to give them "rubberized" handles to coat his coils.  (see

I can't get mine off, but I do lift, shake, etc to get grass, debris etc out of it before I go detecting again & sometimes while I am detecting. Never expected such a tight fit when I popped it on. Is there a trick to getting it off?

Ya Sue some times they like to get stuck on there I have a Fisher 10" elliptical and have to work it slowly all the way around, if im not careful it fells like it will break.
I heard some were that someone had lightly sanded the inside of there cover and it worked good for them. Im gonna try this in the spring.

Coil Covers save a ton of wear and tear on the bottom and sides of the coil.

Sure are cheaper then a new coil.

I've used Reno Bed liner on messed up coils that worked good.

Another Good one is Plasti Dip.   You can Color Coordinate it.  LOL!

I wouldn't do it to a new coil or one still covered by warranty.

As for Removing the Covers to clean,   Just warm them up with a Hair Dryer.   DO NOT HEAT THEM UP HOT < JUST WARM.

They Expand a bit and come right off for me.
