I've never used one and never had a problem with the coils.
Each to thier own
 I think it's a waste of money. But that's just me.

I used them on all my coils.
They do protect them from sharp rocks metal bits and broken glass.
In fact I had to make one for my Sea hunter Mii out of PVC pipe as there is not one available from Garrett.  Sad

Well the other thing to consider is that some folks can't handle the extra weight added to the coil, I have one coil here that I am glad they don't make a cover for and it is huge,

Well when I was a bit fitter I use to use the 12" spider coil all day every day, But this one is the solid type and 15" across, and the only way that it could be done is to add some stick on lead wheel weights under the Arm Rest, Detecting

I'm trying to stick to a good working inexpensive metal detector.  As you know i have a tendency to break them.
