THANKS GUYS, Love the comments.
Had another look, it is aluminium, 1 1/2" long, 3/4" wide, 1/16" thick with a 3/16" diameter nail hole. Looks like a broken end bit from a piece of strapping or the like. Anyway it is obviously of major archaeological importance and I will have to guard it with my life.
P.S. I don't think the press have caught wind of it yet.
