Tumbled my nasty-NASTY, coin in my harbor freight double drum tumbler, that stuff was real nasty, let it tumble for couple days, and it come out good enough to spend, some of the pennies look good, the rest just fair, I use aquarium rocks and dish soap, have for bout the last 10 yr or so, but anymore the coins are so crummy from , I suppose pollution, they just don't clean up very good anymore, but they are spendable Great Great Great

  Here in Deming the whole yard is full of what looks like beach sand.   I use that and some aquarium gravel.   Yep does the job.

I use a Lortone 3A tumbler and stainless still pellets but as you say they don't always clean.
Some times they get stained black from the rubber of the tumbler or if accidental mix a single copper coin with the nickel/copper coins them all turn red. Sad

for mine we use walnut shells, im quite sure my dad buys them in small pieces meant to tumble... just another idea
