Are you frustrated by the local worked out parks and schoolgrounds? Then you should take a closer look at old homes!

Be sure these yards aren't worked up yet. At first it may sound strange to you, but why not simply ask a house owner for permission to hunt his yard?

Tell him that you won't damage his lawn and invite the owner to come along with you and finally offer him to share all finds.

When looking out for homes, concentrate on the older ones. Often you'll find houses that were be built around 1600, or even before. Just imagine the spectrum of coins these house yards could contain!

Go even as far as to making up flyers that you'll leave in the mailboxes of older homes that you would like to detect...believe it or not the owners are even more curious than you as to what they have been walking on for all these years.

Here a few points you should keep in mind, when asking for permission:

    * Introduce yourself and state - up front your objective
    * Bring your detector to the door and show the Homeowner exactly what you will be doing
    * Show your actual digging tool and put to rest any myths that you will be using a shovel
    * Explain that because this is a residence the incidence of trash items will be minimal
    * Offer to share all finds, letting the owner pick and keep any find ... they usually will let you keep the rest
    * Ask questions and encourage the homeowner that you would be happy to detect any neighbor's yard

When having finished with the yard, why not continue in the cellar?

Why so? Just imagine your house was built around 1600 ... many years have passed since ... and many wars. Whenever there were ears, people used to hide their belongings in a safe place. Often this place was the cellar of the people's home.

But often the owners got killed or had to flee, leaving everything forever in its hiding-place, nobody remembering it.

So some treasure could be waiting for you, right downstairs. Why not take a look?

But don't pull down the whole house just because you've detected a gas line in the wall! Best use a UV-Lamp when going for these caches.

It's not uncommon in the UK for caches to be found in old residences, especially the big old country house estates. Often detectorists are called in to hunt for missing items after someone has passed away without revealing what they did with all the jewelery, for instance.

Excellent topic . So many old Houses have never been swept by any Metal Detector !! Because of the location or access , or huge fence or gate , not getting permission , Pit Bulls...etc... . Its like a huge market just waiting to be opened . Also , if a Metal Detector was used 10 or 20 years ago , It is not "Hunted Out" because of today's technology , better Metal Detector's .
Maybe a little Forum Project can be worked on here , If some of us have spare time we can all work together on a professional permission slip that is brief and appealing to a home-owner . A proposal to search with a percentage split of the finds going to the home owner . A house built in 1600 can be be very rewarding for everyone !!
HH......Regards........Eugene

One great tip, once you've gotten permission from the homeowner, is to come prepared with some old coins in your pocket.  Something not too valuable, but old enough for the homeowner to be excited about.  Then when you're done detecting, you can give him the old coins you "found" in his yard, while you can hang onto any more valuable finds.  A little sneaky, but everyone's happy!

Personally, I prefer a slightly different approach. Sneaky is too hard to do and I don't mind surrendering an old ring that may bring joy to a grandma's eyes or to those of the grandchild who just gave me permission to hunt a property. The intrinsic value of the item is usually just too small to forgo those precious moments of joy for the family who lost the item.

I do use the "handful full of old coins" as you suggested to show a representative idea of what can be found there while making no promises of finds just like them at the same time. I also carry a business card that describes me as an Archaeological Researcher.

Surprisingly enough, they open doors. What we do is research in a broad way. I study an area before I begin to hunt it. The really good, untouched areas are out there but we have to work for them. It gets harder each year.
