Fortunately the ground never freezes here but the cold can make my fingers really miserable without gloves. I wear cotton gloves with a rubber palm and fingertips in winter. I want to feel what I am digging up and that does the job for me. When digging in dirt rather than sand, I always wear a glove on me left hand to protect from glass and sharp objects.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
