Hm, I can't say that I've heard that before.  I know that nickel and pull tabs are closely resembled and detectors usually have a hard time figuring them out.  Depending on which detector you have though.  Weeding out trash, well I have a bit of info on that.

If the detector jumps from coin to iron, its junk.  But that may just apply to my detector but I'm sure it does to almost about any.  I have never really found gold yet, so I'm not positive on the pull tabs.

Hope this info helps!! Wink

thanks metal i have a fishers f75 it has very good discrimination i can tune out all iron and any other metals i want.. its also great for nickles they read in the foil and tab cat. but they always read as a 30 or 31 and they give a solid repeatable ping   i find many nickles in "hunted out areas"  cause older and cheeper detectors read them as trash and are overlooked by many

Yes, I usually like to go with repeatable rings on any readings my detector picks up.  But sometimes the item or coin could be at an angle and in which case you should try to swing at different angles as well.  To ensure better readings and get a thorough idea if there is something worth digging there.

Objects with rust on them do mess around with your readings, I believe.  Rusty junk usually emits jumpy and one time beeping swings, and don't read after multiple swings after.  That's what I've experienced with my detector though.

HI Coincounter, I am new o this form. and just seen your post.  I have a MXT and gold an run from the low 6-10 vdi to as high as 57-58 vdi, all depends on how big or how small a ring is. And what k it s also, a 10k will read higher than a 14k or 18k.  10k has les gold than 14k and more other matel. Hope this helped gold can be found all acoss the vdi.  Flintstone

I have two Tesoros,a Vaquero, and a Silver UMax..On both I set the discrimination below nickels and above iron. The "V" cranked as high as possible .....Then ,I stomp a gold filled ring into the ground and make sure it rings like a bell. After that, it is up to the Law of Averages and how well my thinking can bend the rules in my favor..Cordially Nad Detecting

I believe that gold also can ring up as foil as well, I believe the more pure gold rings up as foil.  I'm not sure about nuggets, though.

Gold coins react reasonably well. I just tried a 5 dollar new gold piece on my Silver UMax.It picks up at nickels on the Discrimination scale.. Don't know if the battery is good( the machine has been loaned out, and battery may be down,my Vaquero is DEAD)..The new gold five dollar coin is about dime size..The next drop out point is TAB,and the coin does drop out between nickel and Tab...This is why it is so dangerous to make assumptions on how to set your detector without having the target to test, both for the machine in air , and search conditions.. I'll be back in a couple of days and give you the points on the $5, :)10, and 25 dollar new coins, both in air and one inch under....I have a spot where a 2.5 gold piece is lost in a mess of trash..Problem is, I can't get searching permission..If I were still back in the Orlando area, would hunt in all metal..There were a few 20 dollar gold coins found in some of the older areas..Cordially NAD
