I have read that by taking the cable straight from the search coil to the top join of the lower stem before winding to the control housing will assist in the detection of targets particularly in wet sand. Have only used the detector once on a beach I wonder whether others have found this to be helpful. I am going to the Bundaberg area next weekend and will use this technique if it seems workable. Whether this only applies to an ACE 250 I do not know.

I've never heard that one before.  But then again, I've never used and Ace 250, either.  Let us know how it works if you try it.  Good Luck!

I can't say as I've ever heard of that either.  Would be interesting to know if it makes a difference or not though.  Keep us posted on how it works for you if you happen to try it out.

TasherLock, On my GP 3500 it shows that was on the cover, But heres what really matters is as long as you secure the cable
at the bottom of the shaft about 5" from the coil and wind it round the shaft neatly making sure you leave a small loop below
the first velcro strap to allow for coil movement then wind it neatly all the way up the shaft then put another velcro strap just
below were the lead goes into the control box all will be fine usally 6 to 8" below the control box,
If you leave the cable saging or baggy the movement, or water or even the wind will keep moving the cable and you will get
false signals because on some machines are sensitive enough to pick up their own coil leads, just remember to leave a little
loop at the bottom and life will be good,

PS, stay out of the Rum Distilery up there, its on the left hand side of the Bruce HWY  Grin Grin Grin

Most detector will false more if the cable is loose on the lower end and can move about when swung.

Thanks for your reply. I will wind the cable as you suggest and see what happens. Seems to be the way to go. How could you miss the Bundy Rum factory and its samples while in Bundaberg. Will do a post when I return on both accounts.

I run my cable straight up the lower shaft and wrap around the upper shaft on all my detectors.  It makes a difference if only because it forces me to keep the cable tight so it doesn't swing and cause signal interference (especially close to the coil).

Hi Tasherlock

I also have a ACE 250 and had problems with falsing in sand going faster.

Like others I found the cable was a percentage of the problem being loose.

Yes I had it coiled and tied up the shaft. Even taped the lower shaft at the joint to eliminate movement of shaft twist.

But the thing was it would see it's own cable with just the slightest flex at the coil to shaft area.

It seemed to put the slightest twist or flex in the cable above the coil.

So I strapped the cable to the coil with two cable tie.

Maybe it is the sensitivity of the ACE 250 that makes this a problem.
Plus a few ground balance issues? (Turn off and back on for new area resets ground balance)

Anyway after strapping at the coil it got so much better and stable.
