Go Up Go Down

The last few times I have been to the sand pit playgrounds and tot lots in the nearby township of Bedford, I have seen footprints in the sand from the same person who is wearing a distinctive sneaker pattern and is using a fairly good search pattern. Clearly, based on both my finds and the footprints, he or she (large shoe size so unlikely it is a she) is missing very little but also not clearing any trash. I have found knives, rusted sparkler wires, bits of cans chopped up by the mowers of the nearby grass, bottle tops and screw caps. You name it, I have found it.

While I am always pleased to find valuables lost, I also look at my presence there as a civic minded activity. I clear the lots of as much trash as I can find. If I were smart and only interested in valuables, I would leave as soon as I saw the telltale sign of that other detector user. The only thing missing from my search of his formerly searched lots is the joy of being able to find both reward and trash in the area. His taking of the joy and diminishing it somewhat was beginning to take its toll on me when I came across a glory hole in a previously searched sand pit under one of the platforms that is difficult to search due to the poles. Somebody must have lost a whole pocket of change there and just when I was nearly finished searching, I found one last thing. It was a small locket on a chain with a name engraved on the back.

Knocking on the nearest door, I was informed that the child who lost it lived in such and such house, which happened to be on the same street. This is school holidays week so the little girl, about 7, was home along with her mother who took a couple of weeks vacation time to be with her. I never thought to open the locket being more focused on the name and when she took it she let out a squeal and gave me a bear hug round my neck which was very enthusiastic. She ran off to tell her older brother. Mom then told me they had lost their husband/father/best friend a short while ago to disease and the locket had a picture of daddy in it. Not valuable, as lockets go, but a priceless item, lost but now found, that made my searching that tot lot a true joy. I gave mom the sandy change I had found for her girl and her piggy bank. We both laughed over that one.

So, joy is back! And she is lovely as always.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Many joys and wonders come along with detecting.  The rewards are not always the expensive type, but the priceless.  A truly wondrous side of metal detecting. Wink

I do not even remember walking back to the car. Know what I mean? Made my day. No, it will make my week.

Man,,,,,,,

I am about to cry,,,,,,,,

Let me collect myself......................

That is an awsome story.

I hunt places that have been gone through like that.

The fact that they avoided tha small aluminum and
bottle caps and such is what makes tha sites worth
huntin. Some nice stuff is in tha iron range sometimes.

Thanks fer sharin that story with us,

Tabdog
