Go Up Go Down

I was wondering if this ever happened to anyone else. A couple of years ago I had the chance to detect a home from 1820,when my
friend asked if I would be interested I jumped at the chance. We got together on the weekend and made  the two hour drive, all the
way talking about the great treasure we would find.
When we arrived I introduced myself,(my friend knew the people, he went to school with them),they told me some history about  the
place. We started to detect and what a gold mine, after about eight hours of looking we packed it in for the day. The owners invited us in to see what we had found, both my friend and I opened our aprons to show all the silver coins we dug. To my surprise he kept all the coins and told us we could came back and look anytime. I just took it for granted when we got permission they knew we wanted to keep the coins or share them  with the property owner. Now I make myself clear with the owners ,what they expect or would like to share. I had a great time that day,but nothing to show for it, but I did learn a good lesson.
      Get permission and then some.

Well, this is a very sad story. The old saying is finder's keepers. However I think it owuld have been fair to make it atleast a 50:50 split. Keeping all you found is not ethically right in my oppinion while it may be hislegal right. A strnage person thinking you were to come back to his place and find more for him to keep!

So as you say it is best to make an arrangement before one starts hunting.

Best wishes,

Christian

The way I see it, Christian had just mentioned was unethical.  Though, usually its good to help out the community and get a bit of reputation out there.  Even put out small cards or flyers talking about that you will find lost treasure and supposedly lost heritance of money.  Them are just a few ways to get good permission from many people.  That is a bad mishap though. Your bad experience will benefit all detectorists everywhere! It not only teaches us to be very clear in the beginning, but to maybe even put it in writing. Some have learned to offer the owner a few of the finds for giving permission without showing everything to them.
  Good luck in the future!!!!

Had something like that recently,
Went detecting on a local field and my 10 year old son found a nice little roman bronze coin.
Nothing special, or valuable, but the landowner took it off him and kept it!
Pretty mean hearted to do that to a ten year old!

Yep,
Kind of got my own back though.
Saw the landowner in the field a week or two after, he'd bought himself a detector (cheap chinese one).
Asked me how it worked, i told him as it wasn't like mine, I didn't have a clue..... Devil Devil

A man approached me, while I was detecting, to come up the street a bit & detect his yard. I wasn't using headphones as I'd walked into one too many tree limbs & branches so they were cutting out. The man & I agreed that any sentimental items would be his and we'd split the rest by taking turns choosing them in the end. I started at the sidewalk and immediately found some newer coins. He came up with a story about each coin - I remember dropping that one the other day and couldn't find it, etc. and keeping them. He knew that wasn't what I meant with "sentimental". Grrr! That got old & I decided to end the game.

With no headphones, my detector would beep and he'd be right there - I said "roofing nail" and went on, beep "pull tab" and go on, beep "trash", etc. I told him he didn't have anything but junk in his yard and we'd just lucked out by the sidewalk. I don't think he believed me, but I went back to the median where everything I found was mine. Sue

Rider  GET permission.... GET the goodies.... GET out !!!!!!!  this is not a selfish or sneeky attitude... JUST COMMON SENSE!!!!  NO REASON  to tell anyone you are done when you already gained permission.
