Which GPS uses the USGS maps?  I think Garmin uses their own maps but I could be wrong.  My head is spinning after getting on the web and doing a little research on something that is completely foreign to me.  I was taught how to use a map and compass in the service but am intrigued by GPS.  I can afford something in the $200 range.

I'm not sure since some of my friends use GPS and they have conflicting information on which one is best. I was on a club gold claim with them and their units were a little old and not accurate the day we were out.

I would consider getting a Garmin Colorado 300 for under $200 or the Garmin Colorado 400t for about $250.  The 300 comes with a worldwide base map and the 400t comes with a US topo map preloaded.  You can load your own topo map for free on the 300 if you want to take the time.  A legal, free topo map is available from

.  I use he topo maps from this site on my Garmin GPSMAP76CSx.  They work great.  The units that I recommend are available from the Garmin Store.  Good luck.

There are plenty of GPS in that price range and less on EBAY.  Just look up a review on them when you see one your interested in.    Here is a link to some priced very well.

Ebay GPS

They all do a pretty good job.  I tend to lean towards Garmin as all my software is for them.
Usually the higher the price, the better the antenna setup, better signal under tree's.  Lots of bells and whistles on them also, but for me I just used them for hiking and geocaching for most part.   Although, we live on a farm and was walking out some old boundries for the old granite markers, and by using the distance in feet from target, I found all of them.  Good on the water also for fishing spots in the middle of a lake.....

My feelings are, if you buy used at a good price, you can always get your money back.  Thats how I ended up with 3 of them.....

Good luck.

George-CT

Hi!

I use the basic, yet efficient Etrex H. The yellow thingie.

I tagged every jewelry find I made on the wet sands beaches.

This considerably helped me to understand the very particular "objects deposition rules" of tidal beaches, increasing also my finds.
