Go Up Go Down

A couple of weeks ago I broke the $500 ($370USD) mark in coins so decided it was about time to bank some of the proceeds. As off today my total is actually $565.90NZD. To make it easy on the bank I bagged up the $1 and $2 coins in $100 bags last night but fell short of making 2 bags of the one dollars as I only had $197.

So tonight I headed to a beach determined to find at least 3 one dollar coins.  I wasn't going to be side tracked by old pre-decimals coins, silver jewelry or even a gold ring - it was 3 one dollar coins I wanted! (Ok I lie, a gold ring would have distracted me!).  After an hour of hunting a very bare beach it got dark and I walked away with a 10c Euro, 2 buttons, a knucklebone, 1 old penny,  3 two dollar coins and..... 3 one dollars!!!

It has been exactly 3 months since I started detecting and if I ever bring myself to cash them in the jewelry finds have paid for the detector while the coins have paid for my accessories.  Finding the jewelry and the weird and unusual stuff gives me the excitement and keeps me going out every evening, but it is so good to have a hobby that pays for itself and the coins will allow me to keep upgrading the equipment.

Congrats on finding the 3 one dollar coins as it was your goal. Neat that your detector is paying for itself so well.

Go Up Go Down

I expect the amount of finds to drop off soon.  Being on an island means that I only have a limited amount of places to hunt and winter is fast approaching which means few new drops.  There will be one more "splurge" during Easter then nothing much until October.  During winter my only chance of success will be from storms or if I discover an unlikely place that hasn't been detected.

Found one of these unlikely places a couple of weeks ago. A small muddy / rocky beach I have never seen anybody on yet gave it a try and over a few days plucked out a silver and a gold ring amongst all the lead sinkers and brass boat bits the beach is littered in.

To put things into perspective, I estimate the value of my finds (melt value of jewelry, money, coin value etc) to be $1300USD.  But I have hunted every day for 3 months - sometimes for 2hrs sometimes 3 and sometimes twice a day.  So working on 200 hours, I have earned $6.50USD an hour.  Not enough to give up my day job over.
