Go Up Go Down

hello everyone;;  i have been thunting for 10 yrs as hobby.  found    a qiute a few siver&copper coins, old buttons, etc. but havent found any gold coins yet.  i know some of my sites should have them, but cant find any yet. if someone could tell me what im doing wrong that would be great. and i have a few questions for you pros out there. i've heard that a 5 dollar coin will read pulltab, but im not so sure.  i have tesoro golden umax. it wont pick up my wedding band if i have disc, over iron.  i also had a garrett 2000gti , and it read it foil or below. i also have a 1 dollar size coin and it reads total junk in disc, mode. should i be searching in all metal mode? thats what im starting to think. but cant stand the thought of listening to all those nails, and could i tell difference? also when in all metal mode. should the threshold always be audible? im not so good with all metal mode.  someone please help;;;;   thanks jb

jb, what makes you're doing anything wrong?   That $5.00 gold piece someone dropped in 1900 would be the equivalent of you losing $140.00 today.  If you had 3 $50 bills blow out of your hand (or a $140 gift card), how much time and effort do you think you'd put into recovering them?   The same thing applies to our ancestors which is why we tend to find a lot more lower denomination coins than larger.   I'm not saying that there aren't gold coins out there to find, but if people are going to be honest with you, going ten plus years with out finding any gold coins (even in areas where there is a good chance they were used) is probably the norm rather than the exception.

Even so, you'd probably benefit from some time in a test patch.......that way you KNOW what the targets are and how deep they are and can figure out what works best for you.

If it's not too trashy an area, I run my Tesoro Cibola in all metal (goes MUCH deeper) and when I get a hit, I switch to disc and back at 90 deg to get a good picture of the target size, composition and depth. (sweeping disc while sweeping target)
Once you easily locate a deep, small target in all metal (one you would probably miss 99% of the time in disc) then you can concentrate in a very tight area and it should read out.
Using this method has added an easy 2-3" average on my keeper finds. Wink

"you'd probably benefit from some time in a test patch.......that way you KNOW what the targets are and how deep they are and can figure out what works best for you."
200% agreed with BA on that point. (I have one and I use it!)

Gold is what everyone is after since the begging of our country and even further back. Man I hope to find some one day as well. Don't give up hope on your search though! If your out enough I know something will turn up for you. Keep your coil to the ground.  Great

Every detectorists dream is to find that gold coin, ive been at 33 years hunting places where there may have even been gold coins lost but no luck yet. Just keep on digging and maybe some day one will surprise you. I never had a chance to test one with my XLT to see what one would read, but i remember my grand parents use to have some small ones the size of a dime( $3.00 ), so thats why it good to dig a lot of signals, and do some research on who would have gold coins back in the day. Good Luck....DW

1. No Discimenation.

2.  Hunt where they could have been used.

3.  Any that I know of found were found in a cache or lost in some other fashion.

I think there is many more pull tabs than nails even in my own yard. I also think 99% of us are going to have go to a website to find gold coins

Nice list there Karl, you just never know where you will find a gold coin. I'm shure it wasnt a very lost coin back in the day when it was used. I would think old homesteads where people had lots of money back then(1800's) would be a good place to look if you could get permission......DW
