Go Up Go Down

Hi everyone, I have permission to hunt a grass field where a one room school house and an homestead were burned to the ground about 30 yrs ago.  Where I live they burned old buildings down in the country rather than tear them down.  I am curious if fire impacts the ground in any way.  Any advise on hunting burned sites would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kathy

Hello Kathy,

you should best make sure to discriminate iron as there are likely lots of nails scattered all over the place. Also be prepared to dig up some deep targets! I'm sure you will make some nice finds on this site! Good luck and please keep us posted.

Best wishes,

Christian

yes burning leaves lots of nails behind --(so your will have to discrimate iron or be drove crazy digging them all up) ---- matter of fact since nails in the old days were often  costly and could be hard to get (since they had to be hand made by a blacksmith)-- folks when they moved out west if they did not sell off their home would burn the cabins and harvest the nails to help build their "new" home with once they got there.

Yes, square nails were very valuable back then.  I have searched through a burnt down inn from the 1830's and I have not had any interference with the ground where the burnt objects were.  I found a lot of burnt and petrified wood though!! Grin A lot of nails and more nails.  But, yes that would be a excellent spot apart from the various nails that will be littering the ground!! Good luck and be sure to inform us of any finds!! Wink

Thanks for the advice.  I will let you guys know how it goes.  I plan on spending time there next Monday so hopefully I will find something besides nails.  Do I keep the square nails I find or toss them?

Hm, you can keep them if you want.  I've seen them sold in a group of 100 for about 7-10 dollars.  If you think its worth your time, you can keep them or toss them.  Good luck!!

Lots of time those old school houses were used by the communities for meetings, socials, etc. Unless people have been there already detecting, bet you find more than you expect. Sue
