The Rosehead nails began in 1820-1900 and the normal round headed nail began in 1900-Modern.

If the fire was very hot, you could run into a condition called Thermo-remnant magnetism, in which the fire heats and aligns iron particles in the soil. The result is a area that is "hot" with respect to a metal detector..Usually a bonfire site as opposed to a burned down house..Cordially Nad

yep machine made nails became the norm about 1900 ---putting a lot of blacksmiths out of the nail bussiness except for horse shoe nails.

Like NAD said,Sometimes charcoal and coal will register on your detector.  It's a challenge but the finds can be sweet.
