Well, i have a pretty good machine (R1) and i have pretty good permissions, two of which have documented habitation back to around 1100AD and i am going slow and steady, millimeter by millimeter. But, still i can't crack those hammies!
I know the saying "if it aint there you won't find it", but i'm finding relics (i found a bronze saxon cooking pot leg last week).
Luckily i like finding the newer bits as i'm doing ok there with George II and George III pennies...no silver though :/

Maybe it's just sympathy i'm looking for?  Crazy

Well Steve the way I see it is when your really looking to find it, it just don't seem to come but the day that you do find one then they'll be there all the time, I guess that it's that braking the ice thing LOL

They may be there.
That’s for an idea. Not 100% bullet proof but it will give an idea how they sound and if your machine is capable finding them.
Why don’t you borrow a hammy then bury it at the patik you want to detect at different depths and see if you can hear it.
please let us know the results.

Great advice. I was going to suggest buying one on eBay or at a coin shop. They are plentiful but they also have an odd characteristic in that they are much thinner than people imagine. Buy one and super glue a piece of fish line to it around 3 feet long (1 meter). Superglue comes off by picking at it with your fingernail or using nail polish remover so you won't harm your coin. Do some testing to see what they sound like. Most hammered coins are found at an average depth of 10 inches. Those found in farmer's fields are turned up and moved around to closer but those are not the common ones found on otherwise undisturbed occupied lands.

Bury your coin with the string attached at a varying depth down to that 10 inch point and see how your detector reacts. Look for it flat, on edge and at angles ( _ |  /). Contrary to popular belief, a coin standing on its edge gives a little better signal than one flat because it interrupts more flux lines and gains a higher flux density on the surface of the coin. Both of your machines are probably capable of finding a hammered coin at 10 inches but the key is recognizing what it sounds like.

The string? Well, that keeps you from losing it in the ground in case you can't locate it during testing. Fish line won't affect your testing. If you're lucky, you can find one with a hole in it that was used as jewelry. They are cheaper because they are seen as "damaged" but for your use, it would be perfect.

Here is an inexpensive one with a hole.

grid search it and do it again  get rid of as much trash and we all Know it's that 1 inch of ground that we missed that can make all the difference.

Closest we can come to them are the Pillar Dollars or the like.  Did find some Silver Reale Coins in Florida, those are Cut off a Bar and Hammered.

Go Up Go Down

Thank you for all your help.
I did source a hammered silver coin, luckily a friend had one spare. At least this way i know its made out of what i am searching for and not some fake knocked up by someone in their spare time at work.

It does pick them up, it's quiet at 3 inches, very quiet, but its there. So, what i have done is switched over from an analogue signal (the quieter it is, the deeper it is) to digital (one tone so long as it is within range). Obviously this has the effect that i can't use the signal volume as a depth indicator, but i do have the visual GPR graph on the screen for that.

Another thing i have learned through this is the importance of being able to set up the ground balance. I'm still learning that one, but i'm on the way which is the main thing

Thanks for your help guys Smiley

Do let us know how you get along with your ground balance. Remember that a coin that has been in the ground for a long time will give you a louder signal than a coin that you put in the ground for testing purposes
