I do not have a lot of money, but out of curiosity, what is the meanest machine out there?

I am talking waterproof to the deepest wrecks, GPS built in, meters, wi-fi, dredging hoses, color touch screens, sonars, automatic treassure finders, lasers and photon torpedoes.

What specs are on the top notch detectors one can acquire, and what kind of options would you like to have on yours if you could have it for free?

 Hello LostViking

From what you have posted, perhaps a custom made ROV with all the bells and whistles. Thats what they use on deep wrecks for having a look, but First the wreck is found using side scan sonar and other such methods from a boat above.

I was waiting to see what kind of response this topic would draw, newbie that I am. There are so many choices, even on the top end that even the most seasoned of hunters cannot have tried them all. Each will have its attributes and purpose. More input! More cowbell! Minelab! Fisher! Whites! Garrett!

There are a lot of questions encapsulated in this question . How deep is the water? is it sandy or rocky? strong currents or not? crystal clear or dirt? etc. One detector by its self wont get you out of trouble. You need a summmary of selected tools to be effective in your project from a sand scoop to a magnetometer not to mention waterproof cameras or endoscopes or scuba dive accesoires . You have to visualize potential situations and sort out what could make your life easier on that case :Smiley

I am in the Virgin Islands where there are potentially hundreds of Unchartered wrecks. Depths and bottom vary a lot.
I would like a super versatile set up, but I can't afford it so I am only just dreaming at this point.

Things are made of dreams I would guess that, that's where the wheel came from  . All you need to fulfill your dream is to find one object of value. To put it to you in an other manner, if you want to be on top of a step ladder you will have to take one step at a time, take two and you have a good chance of falling off. Now what would the ultimate detector be? well one that could show you a graphic display of the object in the ground then it should have the capability of good ground penetration but also be able to find small object (you would want to be able to find gold coins)  Davklaud mentioned the magnetometer a very good tool to have should you want to find wrecks.

All the best
Xavier

Don’t forget that you will need fully equipped boat – I am talking winches, dredges, air compressors -to carry the gear on site.
And thats a lot of money.
