There was a discussion recently on one of the treasure forums about the feasibility of making a living with your metal detector by becoming a full time treasure hunter.

Think of it!  No alarm clocks, no early-morning commutes to the office, no suits and ties, no office politics, no boss!

Can it really be done?

In my latest podcast (radio show on the internet that you can listen to anytime) I examine the possibilities.  Go here and click the pink button to listen:

Hello . It is being done , I see ads on craigslist "Will find your lost Diamond rings or car keys" Hourly rate or a percentage [which ever is greatest] , Or split the finds.
So hopefully those people have a decent Machine and not a cheap kids "National Geographic" metal detector !!
Best Regards............Eugene

Hello Everyone . I saw some ads on Craigslist so some people are attempting to do this , only good income if they get enough responses to their ads and actually find what was lost   . But how much they are making is unknown and can vary from day to day . Great thing to do for a retired or financially stable person . I am not retired yet so I can not do something like this everyday . If I am out metal detecting on my time with my machine/expertise and found 5 old coins I would only give one old coin to the property owner if he asks , because one old coin is better than nothing , meaning if nobody ever sweeps his property he will "never miss" what is still missing or hidden !!!
HH..........Regards........Eugene

I have seen these ADS while looking for detectors... I wonder if they are making it happen... It sounds great... earning a living hanging out doors doing what we like to do... searching for anything that makes our detectors whail or lights blink... Got to love a job that keeps you outdoors and not in a tiny cubicle...... while you get asked about your TPS report by 8 different people.. or managers....LoL

I'm a new retiree and new "Detectee" with a new detector and have dreams of making enough to support my travels to various proven sites.  I'll be amazed if I can find enough to buy my groceries but I'll keep you posted. Grin I'm in central Washington state, any advise from anyone about where to try will be greately appreciated.  Happy Prospecting, Ewellene

Welcome to the forums and best of luck with your hobby. You can make a good living on detecting but not by wandering around aimlessly. Research is key to that and finds in the several thousands of dollars per day are possible. Read between the lines on every post here and begin to think like a treasure hunter. The modern coins you can find at any beach, playground or park are not what you should be looking for if you want real treasure.

As an example, when I lived up on Bremerton, I researched a shipwreck site up in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. I found and salvaged it with help. How did I find it? The research started with a tip about bootleg whiskey during the Depression and the loss of a small boat in a Pacific storm. Confirmed by a related article in a Seattle newspaper of the day. The boat was to be boarded by the police when it arrived in Seattle. It never showed up and the police assumed it landed somewhere else. An old timer in Port Angeles told me about his uncle being on the boat and the family knew in their hearts he had been lost at sea during a storm on that very night. The last location was a guess that came from information in the radio logs at the maritime historical society up there (I forget the name now). We found it in 40 feet of water just a half mile from shore at a location I will not disclose. We split the recovery with the family and closed the book on it. The old timer was my first tip on the wreck and led me to the resolution.

Now, this old timer was feeding pigeons at a park in Port Angeles when I first met him on a detector outing. One must keep their ears and eyes open. Youngsters today might dismiss an old fellow and his ramblings as nonsense. I sure am glad I did not.

GD,
Hello mate.... Perth... I really loved that place when my ship landed in freemantle back in 1995... USS Juneau LPD-10... Well anyway... I was looking into trying out streams and rivers to see if I could find some of that gold substance... What kind of dirt or rock will I be looking for to find gold? My guess there has to be a certain type of rock that gold forms between.. I have seen a few quartz rocks with gold in them on displays that said these were rare.... so where is the normal place to find gold... I live near Julian which has been known for gold. The only prospector that I have ran into that actually has a claim to a mine... crushes a ridiculous amount rock to get a small amount of gold... Any info would be appriciated... BTW Nortbridge kicked ass...had a great time..... still have great memories of my time down under...

Keith

Thanks for the advise.  Your shipwreck find must have been exciting.  I've heard tales about gold coins washing ashore somewhere along that general area and have wanted to check into it.  I don't want to make a business out of hunting, but it will sure be much more fun if it pays well!
