Go Up Go Down

I've gone to some old farm house sites. Some are still standing and some were burned down. The burned  spots were full of pieces of tin roof and trash. some of the standing sites were blessed with nails everywhere. I put my discrimination against ferrrous on but still got mostly nails. I'm sure the compostion of the nails had something to do with that.
Do anyone have suggestions besides digging everything? Also, what are the big differences between a $300 entery level machine and a $1000 machine?

Besides digging everything? That's not a good idea - not digging everything.

Most older homes are loaded with relics including old nails which can be worth up to a dollar (or more on some of the more rare types) and all door, window and roof hardware has both intrinsic value and historic value. Collectors and home remodelers go nuts over those items. Aside from chunks of tin and flat metal pieces, nearly everything you dig from an old homestead has worth to somebody. Once you clear out the relics, you will be able to go back over and find coins and small jewelry items.

Hunt the grounds from logical access points to important places. If you can identify the privvy, the ice house, the barn, the livery, the chicken coops, the laundry lines, the sidewalks or foot paths to and from the street and the garden patch you can keep busy for years on just one property. After you clear out the larger relics you'll find dog tags, coins, bullets, jewelry, toys and other small metal objects of interest and possible value. Just last year I found a 6 inch wagon cinch ring on the surface where the rain had washed away some of the topsoil. You just never know what you're going to find on old property.

Well thats not the answer you want but thats the only one that is right Sorry. If you don't have the time to clear out the whole area a section at a time then go over it again to get the deep smaller stuff, just work the areas GD recommended paths to the road outhouse ice house etc.  There are no short cuts no magic machine there is only the old time consuming way that has worked for us for years.

Operator. We have used different percentages but its about 50% operator 50% detector. You have to learn your machine learn what its telling you ignore the bells and whistles learn the tones and sounds. More coins rings relics and caches are found every year by ace 250 Fisher 2 and Bounty hunters then by the 1000 dollar machines. We had a guy here a few months back that upgraded his detector 4 or more times in 3 months. He would not take the time to learn the basics he wanted instant gradation and felt he could buy it, like I said no short cuts.

Locations that old are a Hoot!

Front and Back door walk ways.

Anyplace a Clothes line may have been.

Edges of Drive ways or Buggy Paths around the house.

Remember Money was money back in those days.   A Dime was Serious Money and a Quarter was like loosing a $5.00 bill today.

Your not going to find a pile of change but what you do find is going to be a Keeper for sure.

Depends on the Machine!    Bells and Whistles!   Controls Available!   Performance!

Thanks for your wisdom. The idea of cleaning the area had came to mind. I didn't know if that was a technique that people used. The place I was at yesterday was a one time trip. To compouind the problem of the nails and tin, people had made a dump out of the place. (Judging by the vienna sausage cans I dug the dumpers probably have high cholesterol) and hedge bushes prevented much swinging of my detector.
Always an aventure. Learning to adapt and suceed. Fun times trying to see what the earth is willing to give up.

I have a Decrepit Compass 94B that I like to use on sites like that.

TR and runs at 100KHz.

You can put a Nail or Two over a coin and it will find the Coin but Ignore the Nail.   Go Figure.

That is my Ghost town machine.

No deep by any means but boy it find the goods down to 5"......

It's on the Operating Table right now.    Needs a Pot and I may replace the Battery Test Buttons.    Both are Busted off.

His results on the nail and coin are more to do with the shape and density of both objects, not the frequency.
