One tip I can add to the first part of the discussion (reducing the number of nails you dig)---if the terrain can support it (i.e. the ground is fairly flat and there aren't a lot of obstructions), you might want to make a few passes with a magnetic sweeper similar to the one shown here

That will pick up a lot of the surface ferrous (which you can deposit in one spot to sort through later for good stuff). You'll still dig a lot of nails and junk, but it will reduce the load some. It's a trick that we use out here often enough that I generally have one loaded in the back of the truck when I'm going to a new site unless I know the site is in a really hilly or overgrown area.
