I'm planning a trip in a couple months for a few days.. Have you any experience in packing your md in your luggage? Has it arrived safely?

I'm assuming you remove the batteries from the unit, but is it OK to just put them in a zip lock and put them in the luggage as well?

It has been many years since I traveled on an airplane with my detector, but I never had any problem carrying it in my check on luggage.  It always arrived in great condition and with the plane I was on.  The last time I carried a detector on a plane was before the formation of the TSA.  No idea how it is with them.

Here is info from United Airlines>> Personal devices (except for e-cigarettes and personal vaporizers) installed with a lithium battery of less than 100 watt hours are permitted in carry-on and checked baggage. Loose lithium batteries are not permitted in checked baggage on any United flight.

I had some in a ziplock bag in my check in luggage and they called me back to TSA. Got them back and hand carried them aboard. Otherwise if I had already boarded they would have confiscated them. I usually leave the installed batteries in the detector and pack in my check in baggage. Spare batteries I take in carry on.
