We don't really have one as per say.   Use the Detecting in General Board to ask anything you need.  Best Place.

As this is the Introduction board, I'm moving this to the General Detecting.

By the way.  Welcome to the forum.   Ask and we have it some place.

Welcome from Arizona......so what do you want to know about pinpointers?    If it's about the relative merits of each brand and/or how to use a pinpointer effectively, this is the correct board.  If it is on how to build a pinpointer, one of the do-it-yourself boards we have would be the proper place.    And if it is hot to repair one, I would suggest one of the technical boards under the appropriate brand.

Many people think there a Necessity.  I've been detecting sense the 1970's and don't use one.  I do like the Specific Pin Pointers like the Falcon MD-20 for finding Gold.

For general Detecting, I find I can figure out were the Target is within a few inches.   No Meter , No VDI numbers just by Sound.  Cut a Plug or Around it and get away with it.

My personal feeling is they are just a marketable gizmo and I really don't need one.

Everyone should learn how to locate a detector without a pinpointer, BUT a pinpointer can definitely speed up your recovery time, especially when the target is either very small or very nearly the color of the soil.

The Cen-Tech handheld metal detector, available through Harbor Freight (

) and a few other outlets for under $20.00  is inexpensive and very effective.  You can often find it on sale for under $15 US.  It's light weight, but a bit bulkier than many of the more expensive pinpointers and I don't find it quite as convenient to hang on by belt or stick in my pocket as others.   It's also subject to breakage if you do something stupid like try to dig with it or accidentally sit on it....But at $15 to $20 a pop, most folks can afford to replace them if they break.   Besides, a lot of the much more expensive pinpointers suffer from the same less than durable construction issues.  I've used both the older White's Bullseye II pinpointer and the Cen-Tech.  Of the two, I'd usually be carrying the Cen-Tech out in the field.

I can't speak to the new White's Bullseye TRX, since I haven't used it and don't know anyone who has.  I suspect it's probably comparable to the Fisher F Pointer and the Teknetics Pin Pointer.  From an ergonomic and packing standpoint, those are all better than the Cen-Tech or the Bullseye II, but I'd still have questions about the durability of the probe.   The Garrett Pro-Pointer is a bit more durable than the others, but my personal pinpointer of choice nowadays is the Garrett THD (Tactical Handheld Detector) designed for use by the military and law enforcement.  Its rugged construction means it will stand up to just about any conditions you are likely to find in the field, plus it's designed to be worn as an integral part of a tactical belt...making it easy to carry out of the way but still in easy reach.   (And you can often find one on line for less than what a pro-pointer costs).

By the way, if you are reasonably good (i.e. basic electronics lab capable) there is a good d.i.y. pinpointer project on one of our tech boards.
