I have been spending a lot of time sifting through dirt looking for those small coins, etc. and was wondering what ya'll thought of the hand pinpointers.  Are they worth the money?  Is there one brand or type that stands out?  What do I want to avoid?

Cen-Tech pinpointer from Harbor Freight , $16.00. can't be beat at that price, plus they are highly modifiable, you can add LEDs, and vibrating motors by adding them to the speaker wiring and it willlight and vibrate when you've found something . plus if you adjust the sensitivity pot on the inside of the unit you can pick up coins at 3" in the dirt(which I have found to defeat the purpose of a pin pointer, I like mine to be at around 1/2-3/4")

Err......... that's the whole point of a pinpointer.
How's it going to work as such from 12 inches away?
Simple instructions:

Locate find with metal detector

Dig hole

Find "find" with probe.......

 Grin

A teen aged detecting buddy of mine, the son of a good friend, received a Garrett Propointer for Christmas two years ago. He promptly went out to use his new toy and brought it home broken in half. He had used it as a new digging tool. No kidding.

Sometimes it just pays to read the instructions. To be fair, we both always referred to our blunted screwdrivers as "coin probes." I even taught him how to recover a coin and minimize damage to the coin using his coin probe.
