One place worse I believe are BLM land where they have allowed people to take guns and shoot every thing up. The ground is littered with millions of casings and lead bullets. If the casings were all brass, I would definitely be mining them, however sometime ago when metal values went up ammunition manufacturers started using steel casings.
Back to the Vaquero, I forgot to mention that I had also performed the air test and found that the sensitivity was much better than I had expected. In all metal mode, a dime was detected at 11 inches, and in discriminate mode, almost 8 inches. My Bounty hunter is not this sensitive even if it is a Vlf. I think the frequency difference is probably causing it. The BH operates at 6.3KHz and the Vaquero 15.4 KHz. Also the Vaquero has an 8 X 9 elliptical concentric coil
while the BH is just an 8" round concentric coil. If the Tesoro shows that it is better in the goldfield tests, I will swap their priority around. I plan to try the test on the claims around Gold Hill near Yarnell, AZ soon. They are metal detector & drywash claims only. Wish me luck.
When I start finding nuggets, I might change my handle from Golddust to GoldNugget. Grin Grin Grin Grin

Thanks for all that info mate. The thing is high frequency is better on small items (Not necessarily gold) and the lower frequency gives more depth but you already know that. You could try and make yourself a 4' or 5' coil to find the really small stuff.

Thanks, Xavier. You know I don't know why I didn't think of that myself. DUH. I can check the inductances and capacitances of the 8x9 and build that into a 5.25 widescan coil. I checked for a used one on Fleabay, but they want $100 and up for one. I haven't tried Craigslist yet, but will later. I have 5 inch coils for my B.H. and Garrett, but the mounts and plugs don't match. Your idea sounds like a good one. Thanks again

Your vaquero should have a 4 pin connector and use the same coils as I use for my Lobo.

I've got both concentric and widescan coils for my Lobo.   I use the widescan more than the concentric, but in my case it's mostly because I like the elliptical shape of my widescan coils for getting in tight places.   I even prefer my little 4 x 7 inch elliptical to my 5 3/4" round coil even though they are both widescans.

I think what it all comes down to is where your going to be detecting and for what, I'm going to build myself a widescan coil one of these days just to try it out, never know I may just fall in love with it.

For somebody like me who is not as technically savvy as you are, I've always found Tesoro's explanation of the difference between wide scan and concentric helpful.  I know it is a superficial explanation, but much more and my mind tends to wander.

forgot to add the url for Tesoro's explanation

Thanks for the link. Yes I read that the other day while searching for a coil, but it didn't sink in at first until I went back and reread it. Widescan is the same as a double D coil. However their description is just a little over simplified for the concentric coil. Technically a concentric coil has 3 coils. The primary coil is split into two coils with a small portion wound in the reverse direction. The receive coil is in between these two coils. The reverse coil is used to create feedback to null or balance the coil so there is no signal in the receive coil until a target comes near the coil. Induction Balance, Double "D" and Concentric coils all use an induction balance principle but by different methods  Wise End of lecture. I think I will search for that 4 x 7 coil BA. Sounds like what I'm looking for.

Here is a great link if you want to bust your brain and know just about everything in the world about coils.
