We really can't blame Ermal Fraze, I guess.  I'm sure he had no idea what his invention would do to the treasure hunting fraternity.

It started innocently enough.  In the summer of 1959, Ermal was at a picnic, and he'd forgotten his church key.  He had to use a sharp part of his car's grill to open his beer can!

Well, Ermal ran a tool and die shop, and after the picnic he went home and began working on a design for a self-opening beer can.

And three years later, Iron City Beer introduced the world's first pulltab.

Listen to the whole sordid story.  It's show #128 at:

Finding a can like that is a Major good thing.  Unrusted Steel Cans are Major Collector  Items.    I GOT lucky one time and found 4 still in a old Card Board Box that they put some bags of Salt in too.  The salt sucked up all the Water and they stayed intact.  The 9 cans that came in contact with the salt was just a Pile of Rust.  The ones on the far end was just fine.   Take a jar of salt and put it in your gun safe.   In two weeks it will be full of water.

Ermal Fraze is indeed the inventor of the pull tab, although they were experimenting back in the 1930s with similar designs. We call these 1960s style 'zip tabs' and the later ones 'ring tabs'. If anyone cares I'll post pics but don't want to load up the site with unwanted pics.

I sure would like to dig some silver coins. Until then, I guess I'll be happy digging 1930s beer cans!

Hardly unwanted.....knowing the style of pull tab and when it was most in use often helps date the site.
