Go Up Go Down

The weather was perfect in Raleigh, NC on Sunday! 65 degrees and sunny with a gentle breeze.  I couldn't wait to get outside and metal detect.  There is one spot at the back of our property that always gives me a strong signal but whatever it is, it is pretty deep so I would always run out of time and would tell myself I would get back to the spot later.  Well, I had decided to tackle the spot again on Sunday.  For an hour I dug through red clay and rock and during this dig some freaky unseen creature bit my face - I have a huge welt on the side of my face - I'm sure I came inches from death. I was three feet down with a crazy strong signal when I hit the largest tree root I've ever seen, I was at least 30 feet away from any trees so I was shocked to find it, it was as big around as a baseball bat.  Since the signal remained solid and strong on the tree root and nowhere else, I'm concluding the minerals in the root gave the false positive.  I didn't damage the root so I think whatever tree it belongs to will be ok, I filled in the huge hole and gave up for the day.  It killed me to stop the dig! I hope someone out there had a better dig than I on Sunday!

You can safely cut the root to be sure. That far from the tree indicates that there are numerous others radiating from the tree to keep it alive. You simply MUST get that chest full of gold coins out of the ground.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I love it! It certainly didn't take much to convince me, it only took one person saying it:)  I will dig this spot again!!!

Good luck! Take some pictures too (one now, and then the next of what you find there)! old lead sprinkler line maybe? hehe!
I've got lots of those in my back yard, so for the most part I just give it a pass.
It's finally warmed up out here for me too in Northern Utah, so I may go out swinging a bit this weekend too. We'll see.

Good luck finding the gold.
What type/brand/model  of detector did you use to get the signal?

Thanks! I used my old White's PRISM 950 for the dig on Sunday, this was my first metal detector given to me years ago and I always use it on my first dig of the season.  Once I hit the root I used a few hand helds to hone in on the spot.  I have a fancy underwater one that I may try on the spot right after a heavy downpour, the mud should make it easier to deal with the root, I still don't think I can bring myself to disturb it - I think I will have to just dig around it somehow - it's going to be a good year, I can feel it!!

I will make sure to take photos, a lead sprinkler? No!!! That would drive me crazy! I found an old barbed wire fence about a foot down in the front yard a few years ago, I initially tried digging it up but it goes on forever so now I have to give that a pass when I cross over it.  Good luck this weekend, I bet it is beautiful in Utah, I hope to visit there someday!

You do realize that some of that OLD barbed wire is worth a pretty penny, don't you?  As for your current hole, I'm with everyone else that you should pursue it, but at the depths your talking I'd definitely resist getting carried away.  You don't want to damage any buried lines of any type.

Yeah, I had read about barbed wire being valuable a long time ago - I dread digging it up because it goes on for a ways.  I think what I will do is dig up a section of it an post of photo of the barbed wire here sometime this summer, if it looks like it is valuable then I know what I'll be doing for a few years!

That's what I would do if I were in your position.  I'd dig up just enough of it to establish whether it had any value and leave the rest for now (besides if it does, you don't want to flood the market).
