Hay Joe, that is grate if you can stand to dig all that foil and pull tabs. But when you have a broken back like me, it hard to dig a good target, with out giving up before you get to it. So to find tabs 7or8" is just to much for me.I Guss i will leave  all that good stuff for you young guys, and be happy with clad 2or3" down. Good Luck  Dean

Young Boy

Age is not the criteria, really!

I have a crushed vertebra, 3 or 4 ruptured disks, and I can bend like a darn, but have pain on walking and standing, because of an unassociated injury.... it just limits my time as a tab scourge!

Oh yes, I am 69.

Well now I'm starting to feel young here. I'm only 50.  Wise But we all know the way the story goes in the field. When I start swinging, my Garrett CX, it's fairly light but that sucker gains weight in a hurry. And then I realize that my neck hurts, my back hurts, my hips, my knees, my feet..... whew..... but if I hear that good tone.... down to dig quicker than a dog on a bone. If I uncover something good, I'm suddenly young again.HEHEHE!!! Grin

hi Kendavid (and all),

I was reading your post and appreciating the expression "to dig quicker than a dog on a bone".  Smiley
Has anyone heard about dogs able to nose metal out (I think of some metals that really "smell" like metal - this is certainly a silly idea, I could not find it on the site) ? That would be convenient to have our small friends enjoy digging instead of us ! No more back pain then  Cheesy
My country has an old tradition of truffles and truffle hounds (and pigs) that can detect truffles as easily as my Tejon detects pull tabs - but my Tejon does not dig !

Regards, Joe.

That's certainly an interesting idea, Joe and I can't say that it hasn't crossed my mind a few times  Wink but I have yet to see or hear of anyone successfully training a dog to smell out metals.

But wouldn't it be great???

I love my dog but if he dug up a gold ring for me I think I'd get rid of the wife and marry my dog. Grin

I'm 58, closing in rapidly on 59.

My dog digs when he sees me digging but can't seem to do anything but move sand around and get in the way. He's good company though.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I have three dogs and one is a real clown.   He sees me digging and he makes a show of him self trying to out do me in his hole next to me.

Iron Oxide has a smell I can smell.     Gold does not Oxidize!    Silver Sulfides and would have a smell if bad enough.  I've never seen it that bad.    Funny thing is Silver coins exposed to the sun on the surface turn Cobalt Blue.   Silver is Photo Sensitive.   Hence Photo Film. Ha!

joechip4;

I wonder how many believed the 'truffel pig' part... heh, heh, I do. Wish I had a little dog that would do that as there is a truffel-like fungus, that grows here.
