Go Up Go Down

Right in the middle of a hunt, too! What a waste of an afternoon. It took me twice as long to fiddle with things each time I had to bend over and dig.

The headphone set I was using had that curly sort of wire like a phone has. I have always considered them rather handy since they retract when I put the detector down and do not get in the way too much. In hindsight now, I see that a lot of stress is put on the area near the earpiece where the wire goes in. Over a period of years, that bit of wire there has stretched and contracted, twisted and bent, moved about and generally been abused by just regular use.

Right in the middle of a playground sand pit search, it forced me to twist and play with that damaged area just to get a signal. Normally I have a spare set but not this time. So I suffered. And I called my headset some really foul names. When I got home, I dug out my old faithful headset that is more than 30 years old and still working like new. The difference? A straight wire cord which gets no strain at all. None. Zip. Nada. But the problem is that this is the pair which my bride uses with her detector.

I went to the local detector shop and bought a new set with a straight wire. Max, at the shop, said that he does not stock curly cord headsets unless they only come that way from the detector manufacturers. His reason is the very type of failure that I experienced. He was surprised that mine lasted a couple of years before failing. He recommended a generic set to me which I bought.

This new set has rare earth magnet speakers and a volume control. Ah, bliss! Those previous whispers are now mighty growls and the new whispers are even deeper targets! What a bonus that turns out to be!

So the recommendation from this old guy is to keep a good set of headphones on your head at all times. I have learned my lesson and will buy a spare set of these wonderful, marvelous headsets. No more curly wires for me either.

That does sound like a waste of afternoon.  What is the kind of headphone that you bought called?

I bought the RPG PH-100R which are just terrific. Looks like just some "Made in Taiwan" special.

Would you recommend headphones to anyone of age? Or is it just mainly for someone who's hearing isn't all that good.

Hello Everyone . Metal Detector Headphones are for all ages and have many advantages . 1. Better sound / sensitivity  to weak / deep signals  2. Eliminate background noise especially near busy streets and intersections  3. Most Headphones require less operating current thus increasing your battery life . 4. Privacy , when you hit a good target !!!! I think in the near future all Metal detectors will have wireless headphones . Good for people who like to chop headphone wires when they are in a hurry  Shocked...................Regards...........Eugene

Jeepers! I answered this one and somehow it never got posted.

What Eugene said is absolutely spot on.

I also like the ability to hear those whispers of change to my threshold setting. This particular set of headphones is better than most and apparently imported from Taiwan by Minelab. Very, very nice. I will be buying a second set the next time I make the trip to the detector shop.

One other thing that Eugene did not mention is that the headphones allow you to ignore children and adults who always want to ask you questions. You can point to the headphones, shake your head, look at them quizzically and pretend not to hear a thing. They give you an artificial zone of privacy.

Hm, that sounds like something that would aid greatly in my hunts.  I will have to look into that, thanks for the information everyone. Smiley

I almost always use them. I am a snob about it also.
I would recomend Killer Bees or Gray Ghost Basic at
least. They both cost $85, the last time I checked.
A better pair would be nice, like Sun Ray Pro Gold,
or even better, Ratphones.

I have not used the RPG PH-100R, but acording to
tha specifications, they will not hold a candle to
Killer Bees.

Lots of folks dissagree, as did I, but after I tried
them, I was sold. The construction is visably much
better. The cables and speakers are bigger better
and more durable. Their frequency response is made
to make metal detector responses sound clear.

The cheaper ones are more like cheep stereo
headphones. They are better than nothing, but they
sound real muffeled compaired to a quality set of
metal detector headphones.

Thats my story, and Im stikin to it,

Tabdog

Forgot to ask.  But, where could I purchase this headphone? I went to all the stores online that I know and can't seem to find them.  I have found the RPG, but not with the extra numbers and such.
