The batteries in my goldscan 2 are getting a bit tired these days . It takes a dozen C size units which are all linked in series . Has anybody here made up their own pack ? Any advice on how to do it would be usefull as i dont want to blow myself up .

First, measure the voltage to be sure they are C and not some other battery. They should have around 1.2 volts per cell. If they are, order some soldertab batteries from your favorite source. Soldertab batteries have tabs spot welded on to each end. You can safely solder the tabs together without fear of causing damage to the batteries or the human doing the soldering.

Modern batteries have a very high current capacity even compared to just a couple of years ago. So that means you can lighten the load by using either the same C or Sub C batteries with soldertab or reduce to AA. I have some AA rechargeable  batteries with 3300ma capacity. That outshines the original batteries in my Sea Hunter but double. I installed them and found that neutral buoyancy was gone so I ordered more of the right size but land based detectors can be lightened by modern batteries. Just don't be tempted to go LiPo without the proper charger and heat sensor.

Here is an example of soldertab batteries you can use:

Thanks for the quick reply . The old batteries are also polywrapped .Is it ok to bind the new ones with plastic tape or similar .

Sure. eBay has sellers that sell large shrink tubes just for that. Cost is low.

I wouldn't recommend tape. It gets sticky and may fall open in hot weather. Use zip ties or shrink tubing.
