The best choice for a cheap trasfer paper with exceptional results is un limited and free.  Just use the cheap junk mail catalogs. Thin, glossy, and white is the best but most any travel brochure, coupon oook, kmart add, etc will work greak. Best part is that the paper is so cheap that it cleans off easily and leaves a really great crisp image.

Thanks for the info. I do have a question though. Do you need to attach the thin glossy (ie.. coupon book, Kmart add) to a plain sheet of paper to prevent jam-up in the laser printer? Or can the thin glossy be fed directly into the printer from the paper tray..

You can use a commercial paper cutter/trimmer or just a ruler and razor knife to create the exact size paper to feed. Remember that many copiers accept many different sizes of paper. i.e.  10"x8",   5"x6" etc.      But to answer your question conpletely: there is no need to tape the magazine paper to conventional paper to prevent jams. You will just need to manually feed by hand the paper into the machine and set the machine for the proper paper thickness. I have heard that this process works best by setting the thickness for envelopes, which sounds wrong but they say it works becuase there is plenty of thickness between the print rollers with that setting.  I MUST POINT OUT that I personally have not set mine that way so can't say if the info is true. My machine has a specific setting for mag paper. Lastly you must still use the same type Lazerjet ink as usual. The type with toner in the ink, which is of course powdered plastic.

I'm going to give it a try. I have a Samsung ML-1665 laser printer (nicely priced from Amazon). It's just a basic laser printer that prints pretty well. Any last suggestions before I begin??

No . Nothing more to it. But just trust me it works as well or better than anything you can buy. So.....if you don't like the results try a different magazine, higher or lower gloss, thickness etc.  The bueaty of the thing tho is that generally the paper used is so very cheap quality that the pulp quickly disolves in water when doing the clean up of the board.
I usually set the ink level to as heavy as I can get away with and still maintain clear and clean traces.  Have fun,   Phil

Having a lot of jam up issues. The manual feed is more like "place paper in the paper tray and push the print button". I'm getting closer the more I experiment. I'll keep you posted..

Success! Finally got a good transfer. The printer I'm using is a bit pick about the paper. I found it's best for me to use a magazine type (I actually get the best results using the product index page from a Jameco catalog) paper. Unfortunately, I have been working mids and not much time to experiment. But the bottom line is as I have read in many threads is to keep on trying until a successfull approach is found. Thanks for the advice Turtlebowl.

Good news, I don't have to work tonight and can continue with this transfer technique.. Bad news is, I don't have to work because of the on going blizzard and I'm snowed in.. Anyway, I transferred the art work to PCB using the usual hot iron and pressure, lots of pressure. After cooling and placing the PCB in warm water, the paper nearly dissolved it's off leaving a very nice pattern.. With the exception of two missing small traces, (I expect due to me not applying even pressure during the ironing process, easily touched up with a Sharpie Permanent Ink Pen) the PCB is ready for etching..

That's really great news J!  Each member that wants to try will have to experiment with the best type mag / junk mail paper for their own printer. But after that it's fat city. Best part is that it doesn't even have to be ink free copy as the ink usually used for printing magazines will not transfer to the board. Just the toner inks will.
Do you have any tricks for transfering a two sided board??  Two irons???  Wish I knew. Guess I'll have to search the net.  Phil/Turtlebowl/Grandmazhouse
