O.K....... this one may sound dumb... but It has me wondering about battery usage.. Does a metal detector use more battery like using a larger coil say the difference between a 7.5" and a 10". Also how much more power or depth do I expect from the same sized coils above...? These coils are VLF....
Thanks...
Keith

A larger coil will use a tiny amount more power but the collapsing field is also larger so the difference is small. The collapsing field will, in some detectors, put energy back into the circuit making the next pulse less energy costly. Excitation circuits like the transmit coil constantly cycle through in a regular manner and the coil, capacitor and any other active components all work efficiently if they are tuned - and they are.

It will not likely be noticeable at all.

This is a great disscussion. I'm waiting for a 12-1/2" coil for my detector. I'm using the 9-1/2" coil that came with it. Any feedback?

The feedback you hear in your headphones is deeper targets! How cool is that?  Cool

The larger coil will find larger targets much deeper usually,
but the smaller targets like coins will not be found much
deeper. The sensativity to very small objects is reduced in
larger coils. Larger coils cover a little more ground when
swinging.

I usually keep a 5.75" coil on my machines, but I also use
a 7", a 8", a 9"X8", and a 12"X10" coils. Just depends on
what I am doing.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

If you want to hear much better and save a bunch
on batteries, get a quality, made for metal detecting
headphones. They start at $85. But they have lifetime
warranty.

If the cheep ones break (which they will) you will have
spent enough to buy quality when you get your second
cheap crappy pair.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog
