VLF Treasure Detector, White's 2500/D Coinmaster, circa 1988??
« on: May 16, 2014, 09:49:40 am »
Go Up Go Down

I have an old White's 2500/D Coinmaster. It was a gift from my brother and he didn't know anything about it. It's a beautiful machine. It looks brand spankin new and doesn't have a scratch on it anywhere. The bottom of the coil isn't even dirty. It came in a soft sided case, with the manual and everything like it was bought with. The only thing missing was the wingnut that held the coil tight. My problem: As soon as you turn the power on, it starts screaming at me. it won't hush no matter what I do, except taking the battery out. I've tried everything in the manual as far as adjustment but still no luck. All the controls are set on the "preset" marks but it still beeps. Ive tried to set it according to the instructions but still, beeping. It has the button on the handle to set it with but that makes no difference. Can someone please help me with this. I had one guy tell me that it probably wasn't worth fixing but I have no choice if I want to try metal detecting. Thank y'all in advance cause I know someone's gonna help me.

Hi Kudzu, welcome to the forum from Oregon!   Welcome   I'm not a tech guy, but there are plenty on here.  Someone will help you.   My advice would be to call White's.  Someone there will be able to tell you if it's worth repairing, or maybe even tell you what it needs for repair.  Good Luck!

It sounds like the coil has got damp inside, Try leaving it in a sunny window for 3 or 4 days to dry it out or even quicker put it on the dash of ya truck but keep an eye on it and see what happens,,

good luck AU

It's more likely to be an open coil either from a broken wire or corrosion. That's the most common cause of that symptom.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

You are using a vingnut made of metal, aren't You.. That's why the detector won't shut up, because it sees metal all the time..
Use a nut made of plastic.

The screw that came with it is made of metal but it has a rubber washer on each side. The nut wasn't there but I found an old nut to put on it. It's made of metal but it is not a wing nut, just a plain little nut.

Get ride of all the metal bolt and nut that holds your coil on. USE PLASTIC bolt and wing nut.......go from there.....

You have an metal detector, It is supposed to detect presence of metal. Now You have attached the coil with bolt and nut made of metal, isn't that obvious- it sees metal. Compare the size of the bolt, with a small gold nugget You would want to find, burried 5" in the ground. Which one is easier to see, the bolt or the nugget.
Replace the bolt nut and wathever with plastic (nylon) ones. Go outside to the countryside, where there isn't any metalobject near, and start the detector. It should work flawless.
Happy detecting

If this detector is a motion detector then it will not be affected by the wing nut.

Even with all metal NO Motion the nut would null out.    I too think its a coil issue.
