I had the same problem with an old detector I had given to my brother. I thought it was the unit, but when I sent it in to Garrett ( it was an Acer 350 ) it turned out to be the coil, which they gladly sold me a new one at a 60% discount compared to buying it through a dealer, to which I was happy to do. What I would suggest trying if you can is attach another compatible coil and see if the noise continues, if it does try using the coil over a coin to see if this coil works at all with your unit . If it does then you know its the coil, if it doesn't you might either have a bad coil anyway because the replacement coil might not be compatible in the first place, you can always send it in to whites repair for an estimate ( sorry you will have to find that yourself ). Good Luck.

If u still have the metal detector and its not fixed try this the spring that is on the coil cable that's screwed in to the box try to un screw the spring a little as it might be shorting out the pins etc in the cable just a thought or could be a coil problem as stated or after doing all the adjustments turn down counter clockwise the sensitivity and while doing this push in on the red button on the end of the handle and let off as this sets all the adjustments and sets a memory.
