Hello fixitcheap . DIY " do it yourself " gives you plenty of practice and experience to solder electronic component's to a printed circuit board "PCB" . Correct parts placement and schematic reading experience .
Then applying power and field testing the Metal Detector and of course the winding of a search coil . If the unit does not work then the learning of troubleshooting , 1st visual and then by the use of test equipment . By building metal detectors you gain knowledge of theory and function of the different stages: RX,TX,DISRIMINATION ,AUDIO,ETC ETC....
Buying a good metal detector is fine , but building one is better if you have some electronics background and would love a great new challenge . A lot of schematic's are posted on our Forum .
