Hello. Diy detectors have always interested me but I have not seen any that were more than a radio and coil of wire. I wanted to ask some questions of the experienced. Are there advantages to building your own detector? is it less expensive than buying a manufactured one? Can one achieve a greater quality? Is there specialized equipment used just for detectors or is the same as for other electronic work? Thanks for your time.

Most folks would be better off purchasing one then building.

But there are people like me that like the thought of doing stuff the hard way too.

To do it right, you would need the following test gear.

LC meter

O-Scope

DVM

And a few other toys would be nice.

Depends on what your building .

More importantly, you must have a soldering iron and a place at home to use as a laboratory without disturbing other family members. DIY is a hobby and needs money, time and place!

Hello fixitcheap . DIY  " do it yourself " gives you plenty of practice and experience to solder electronic component's to a printed circuit board "PCB"  . Correct parts placement and schematic reading experience .
Then applying power and field testing the Metal Detector and of course the winding of a search coil . If the unit does not work then the learning of troubleshooting , 1st visual and then by the use of test equipment . By building metal detectors you gain knowledge of theory and function of the different stages:  RX,TX,DISRIMINATION ,AUDIO,ETC ETC....
Buying a good metal detector is fine , but building one is better if you have some electronics background and would love a great new challenge . A lot of schematic's are posted on our Forum .
