It only have one way RS-232 -- from PIC to Computer. For diagnostic purposes only.  No plans for adding through cable programming support. Firmware program update is and will be only by removing PIC from the circuit.

I see. You were referring to data recovery. Is that for fine tuning the discrimination functions?

To bypass that, why not use a removable flash memory chip? Store your data there and remove to read it. Or, download it serially using a cable via the programming port.

I have done enough pic programming. Latest version is as good as it gets, I am happy with the design as it is at the moment, and see no point trying to improve it. It is miniaturistic desing with very few parts, and it do its job. Now I will focus on mechanically improving my detector design, to make it rugged for field work. Sawmilling in my case, not actually treasure hunting. As it is the derector is able to detect a nail in at least 15 cm in wood, without too much false alarms, and that suits me well.

Although I have already got in too deep into the detector building and so I Will start working on a completely new design. It will have LCD and knobs and discrimination and some other fine features. But I gues it takes some time before I can come up with some usable prototype to share.

I don't understand you. You mentioned that you didn't want the overhead of RS-232 and you explained it was so you could download from the detector. The only thing you'd want to download is data. Why download your program when you are the originator of it? So, I suggested you use the single pin programming option. No matter how many chips you have programmed, you should still be open to suggestion when you post your comments here. Otherwise, remain silent and keep working.

In short, if you don't want help, stop complaining about something like RS-232 taking up too much memory. If you choose I2C over RS-232, you have zero overhead because that function is built into ROM on all modern PIC chips. How do I know all this? Well, mate, I am a third party consultant with Microchip to this day, even though I am mostly retired from electronics engineering.

GD, I have nothing against your comments and suggestions, sorry if it looked that way.
Also I have no problem against RS-232 taking memory, there is plenty of it, inside PIC. Just that for everyone else trying to understand the program it makes things difficult.

Are you sure you don't mean IRF640? As long as it is an N channel MOSFET it should work. This is going to be extremely low power no matter which MOSFET you use.
