OK guys,

Let's not laugh too loud about the following questions. I am not a techno geek so give me some help here. First of all, does anyone know of a basic book to respond to the following questions in a down-to-earth fashion without getting too techically complicated? If so, let me know.   Now here are the current questions.
I have a DFX 300 (2 frequency)...
1) When running with both frequencies.... when you adjust the audio threshhold, does it apply
to both frequencies or is it that I don't understand the 'threshhold' feature of the unit?
2) Why do some metals respond to one frequency but differently (or not at all) to the other(s)
frequency? (molecular structure of the metal?)
3) Why does saltwater affect the (mineralization) of a metal detector?
4) On a two frequency unit, are there two different sets of wires in the coil or do both
frequencies operate with the same set of wires (conflict?)?

More questions to follow unless you can identify a 'detector book for dummies' for me... I figure if I can get a basic understanding of the electronics and their impacts, then I can become better at this hobby.  The manual tells you what the 'bells and whistles' do and how to adjust them but really doesn't tell you the "why's".  But then again, I don't need to know scientific information, just a basic understanding.  Thanks, Coloma Gold

Hi there, yes the threshold does apply to both frequencies and whats more when you are using one frequency only
the other one is still working although the machine is ignoring it,

and if you look at the frequencies like a row of glass'es with water in them and a differant amount in each glass
sound will resinate at a differant pitch when an opera singer opens her gob,
In the same way metals respond to differant frequencies emitting a sound of their own and which ever frequency
the detector has close to that signal is what you hear,

the reason salt water causes problems is because the minerals in salt water is also conductive,

as for the 2 frequencies the both travel down the same wire and all the rest is done within cleaver software.

the threshold feature of your detector helps you pick up faint signals this is why you must set it a quiet as
possible so it is just a faint sound so weak target can break through that threshold and alert you of an Items pressents

hope this helps,

AU

Get the book called Digging Deeper with the DFX by Jeff Foster and read it over and over and you will become
a black belt with that machine, and you wont need anyother books for a while yet

Thanks RidgeRunner,

I am checking into buying the book. Hopefully it will not be too technical but will still be informative (as a layman). I figure that if I understand the DFX, a lot of that knowledge is transferable to other units. Coloma Gold

As soon as you understand what each setting in the menu's does then your off to a good start,
and when you know whats under the coil then nothing will hold you back,

Understanding White's DFX by Jimmy "Sierra" Normandi    this is a good book on the dfx.

Thanks Joe 19403,

I already bought an excellent book, "Digging Deeper with the DFX" by Jeff Foster. I am reading in presently (it is a little over 100 pages). After checking with White's they said that I will not be able to find a better book (This book was recommended to me). It is not too technical to understand but I am reading it slowly in order to understand many aspects (I am not an electronics geek). Thus far I am on page 40 and it has already helped me to understand many of the features of the DFX and about electronics in general (that I can apply to other MD's).

I appreciate your recommendation as I have bought a previous book for Jimmy "Sierra" prior to moving from California. Perhaps I will but Jimmy's book later...Coloma Gold
