I received a Garrett beach hunter detector from the family of a deceased friend. It was bought new from Kellyco about 21 years ago for about $325 and used only a couple of times. It is in like-new condition. Can anyone tell me anything about this unit, depth expectations, etc? Thanks for your help.

What model is it? Garrett had TR units and PI units---the PI units were most common and have no discrimination on them---you have to dig it all with those old units----the TR units had manual ground bal controls...but thy did have some discrimination capability. They were called Sea Hunter (At least the ones I saw were).

No, this unit is not a Sea Hunter. It has the name Beach Hunter on it. It has an on/off/volume control; two separate discrimination controls with ferrous metals, pulltabs, coins, rings, gold range; and a pinpoint button.  It's only waterproof to a depth of 5 feet and has a seal in the control box that is supposed to be lubricated with silicone grease. Apparently only for use in the "splash zone". The unit has no speaker, only headphones. Uses three (3) nine volt batteries. The owner's family said that he found coins on the beach and a large cannon ball with the unit near a coastal civil war fort. It was not used after that.

Those are best known as the AT series.

It's a VLF machine.
