being an old guy that never throws much away (hoarder) I found my Garrett ground hog and put four fresh 9vs in it an guess what it does not work.I am a little lectrical savvy and luv to fix things myself. Lot less trouble that way. I need a schematic on this thing The problem is that when u turn it on the speaker is real loud. I try to tune it as per the instructions but to no avail. Touching one little component on the board causes it to silence.  A schematic or any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I used to find coins with this thing it worked well. Some say the capacitors need to changed out. I can do this but I don't know what some of the components are. any help would be appreciated.

Did you try to Press the Tune Button as you Tune it?

Not yet. Check out the mechanical things that go wrong first. Clean the contacts on your battery box and on the PC board. Make sure all of your solder joints are clean. Then check all of your electrolytic capacitors for swelling. Yes, they go bad and when they do they swell up making the bottom of the capacitor push upward. Check your wires to be sure they are all still connected but be careful you don't break off any of the more fragile. Wires do get old and their insulation cracks. The wire itself can also get a bit corroded and fragile so look carefully.

Since it is most likely that it worked fine the day you stored it, the issue is most likely corrosion of some kind. Clean all of the movable contacts like the battery snap connectors and use some spray contact cleaner on your potentiometers one by one. Let us know how things work out after tha.

The schematics you are seeking do not exist on the Internet. Many of us old Garrett owners have tried for many years but Garrett won't release them and they have not been reverse engineered. The design is complicated and you can find some hints of the circuits involved by searching the US Patent Office database looking for Garrett in both name and company searches.

Good luck.

I did completely wash the board an the pots. checked all connectionsfor corrosion. The unit is in very nice condition. no dirt the wires all look fine.but the volume is loud an it will not tune. The ground cancel turns an turns an turns to no  effect. the tuning pot does not respond at all either. The speaker sound is a loud buzz like I just found the Queen Mary or somthing.

Nope it didn't help at all have lotsa batteries though. may try spraying the other pots. One of those little glass capsules sileces the speaker when I press it with a pencil. neighbor is a lectric instrument man but he says a scehmatic would really help.
