You could just order one from Garrett. There are at least 4 models each with different ratings and, as you know, a very unique plug for the detector.

You have to figure out which battery pack you have... 3 9V or 7 1.2V Sub-c's then are they NiCad? Are you in need of the connectet as well? Ikelite makes the connector

If you are using the original batteries you might think about getting new ones.. I just did that for both of my XL500's (VLF and Pulse). I purchased them on e-bay. Just make sure the charger is rated at 40mA or less I think my charge is 14 volts output as well.

This should be compatable as well

you might have to check the polarity though..... but the connector is the same and this is made to charge 7= 1.2 Sub-c batteries.....

but make sure you can get one at garrett first.. if they are still available...Huh??

I just use a wall module rated 12v 300ma.

Works fine for me.

Hell I've charge them from the cigarette lighter in the truck before.

300ma is perfect and the cigarette lighter plug that comes with it has current limiting built in. Use any other and you might sort of damage it.

No, the Wall outlet source comes out to about the C-10 charge rate.

I just hot wired to the unit with it turned on and let it set for half hour and was good for the next six hours.

The charging system of the XL500 is in put through the Head Phone jack.

12 volts is the required voltage to charge the 9.6 volt battery set up.

I have one. If you wire it into the car battery circuit, you may damage it. Ask Garrett.

I replaced my batteries about two years ago. The old set, more than 25 years old, was still working but I was going on a critical hunt and didn't want to risk failure. The old batteries are still holding a charge on my bench. That speaks volumes towards using the charger recommended by Garrett rather than one that happens to work. Of course, your mileage may vary.
