DUDE are you nuts why on earth would you want to try such a thing?  Every thing in that machine was designed around the voltage (and a hell of a lot of other things) if you want to use a 12v battery to run it there is no problem as long as you regulate the voltage to the operational voltage of the machine but you cant make it run on 12 volts.

One the ADS  Detection circuit is Designed and works at like 8 Volts.   It uses three 9 Volt batteries so the current stays within usable hours of operation.

Yes it is Regulatated.

When the Batteries fall bellow the 8 Volt level you will know all about it.

Going to 12 Volts is Useless.   Deminished returns.  Just use it as it is and Learn how to find the Toons.

Is it possible for a detector to opperate sub currented? Where say the detector could use more milliamps?

Also, what makes detectors lose detection depth when discrimination and extra features are enabled, could circuit/power desighn not perhaps work around this?

Just use the recommended batteries. You cannot improve the performance just by adding voltage. Your current draw (milli-amperes) is not something you can change. If you could, you'd blow up your machine. I mean that literally. It would explode and probably take out a room in your house. The batteries have a milliamp rating which is the capacity of the battery. Your machine draws as much as it needs, normally less than 1% of that current rating. Any more and you'd be on dead batteries in a few seconds. Adding more capacity just allows you longer time between battery changes but the extra weight is not worth the trade off.

You have two circuits inside of your your power supply area. One of them is 9v and the other is 18v. It's far too difficult to create the 18v from 12v so just give it up.
