I have a whites eagle spectrum and was wondering if i use a hip mount could i carry a rechargeable gel cell in a belt pouch. Has anyone used these. I thought i could have a pigtail in the battery compartment and a pigtail for the battery. That way i could keep an extra battery charged and could change it quickly. any thoughts? Thanks

The best battery discharge curve of any battery known to mankind is the lead acid battery. The gel cell battery is one. I wholeheartedly recommend their use for metal detectors. They are the most rugged battery I have ever used for any project. One of the best things about them is their ability to withstand a constant trickle charge without damage.

Thanks..i have several new 6v4ah batteries that are small enough to attach to a utility belt. Do you think these will work ok with my detector?

I don't see why not. Are they new or used? If used, test them with a 6v light bulb. Hook a bulb up and watch to see how long they burn. Just have them going in the living room while watching TV or something. Should go two days or so before going dim. You can speed it up by adding a resistor but that's not the ideal way. Use the two that stay lit the longest. Keep the others charged up as reserves.

The only downside to those cells is the weight. Watch your pants don't fall off!! Grin Grin ...And don't deep discharge them too often.

I don't know why people don't use NiMH batteries.

You can get NiMH AA batteries up to 3Ah each, and they are cheap.

If you want 6V, 5 NiMH batteries will give you 15Ah, which is far lighter, cheaper and has much longer Ah than a 6V gel cell.

If you are happy to carry the weight, you can get 11Ah D size batteries, to get 55Ah for your 6 volts. And that would still weigh less than your 6V gel cell.

If people are worried about power supplies for their next generation high power laptop super detectors, NiMH is the way to go..

A 10A coil discharge with a 12V (10x1.2Vx11Ah) D sized NiMH power source would go for about 11 hours...

Any high current (>1A) projects out there?

There are several reasons I do not use NiMH batteries and the first is self discharge. The newer batteries by Eneloop and a few other companies have fixed that issue but you have to charge NiMH batteries right up until you use them or they drop in voltage and capacity by 20% as soon as you put them into your machine. Alkaline batteries will be as fresh as the day you bought them if you don't store them in your furnace room. Keep them at room temperature and they'll stay fresh for around 10 years. NiCad batteries don't self discharge either and they are making a comeback.

New battery technology is also coming along nicely and you'll be hearing a lot about Lithium batteries for metal detectors in the near future. Right now, the current loading is too great for the delicate creatures but soon that will be overcome.
