That sounds like a neat project. What are you using for processors?

Arduino Nanos. Small package, Auto running, and lots of help on the forums as well as gobs of programs, libraries on github.  All free and open source. Did I  mention cheap? $2.50 each. Less from China.

Also forgot to mention that you don't have to buy a burner. You program it directly from your computer using the IDE. There is a mini USB connector on board. You don't really need a 32 Mhz controller to build a PI detector. Pulse frequencies are usually 1 kHz and under and pulse widths are just a couple of hundred uS at most. The Nano has a response time of 625 nano secs. Plenty fast enough.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

One thing I forgot to mention is this. Turn off your receiver entirely during the TX cycle and delay turning it on again based on trial and error. The TX coil field should be completely collapsed before you turn on the RX. A snubber resister across the coil will do the job of collapsing it faster.  The TX signal will swamp the receiver amplifier and may even damage it as the return eddy current fields you are "listening" for require 100,000 or more gain. They are very, very faint.

Been playing with Arduino here for some time now.  Some how I've ended up with a pile of the things.  Started with three Nano just to play around with. Sounds like I'm late on this one but Be warned !  They're ADDICTIVE !  This is just what I've listed as having in my Arduino Get Kit.  LOL

Lots of awsome hardware there bud. Have you made anything with them yet? What I am doing with the 3 Arduinos is having them do the slower things like human input, displaying stuff, generating pulses and sound, serial communication, and stuff that usually eat up processor time. The actual processing of the coil signal will be done by a high speed, low noise, circuit. Not talking TL072 (lol). All new stuff.

Forgot to mention. You will need the Chinese driver for those Nanos. The American ones use a FTDI chip. If you don't have it I can pm it to you or upload it to the download section.

The CH340 Driver is Easy Do.  All but the Pricey Chines Arduino uses it.   Cool

Done a few things with them.  Nothing Note Worthy in the detector realm.

Current Project is for a guy I know building a Microlight.  He lives  just over the dotted line in California from you.

Gathering Parts , Have all the sketches and Libraries.  Attempting to follow a known working system.

Struggling Wrapping my head around some of this stuff.  I have until Next Summer to get it working.  LOL   :Smiley   Tongue   Undecided

Once you have a Arduino in hand you can make them do things in just minutes.

From the Arduino Home page you can obtain any and all Software to get started.

I'm waiting to see how Carl goes about the PI Front End Rx Amp .

The Arduino's ADC sorta Sucks with only 10 bit  samples limited to 0-5vdc.

https://www.arduino.cc/en/Reference/AnalogRead

analogRead()
Description

Reads the value from the specified analog pin. The Arduino board contains a 6 channel (8 channels on the Mini and Nano, 16 on the Mega), 10-bit analog to digital converter. This means that it will map input voltages between 0 and 5 volts into integer values between 0 and 1023. This yields a resolution between readings of: 5 volts / 1024 units or, .0049 volts (4.9 mV) per unit. The input range and resolution can be changed using analogReference().

It takes about 100 microseconds (0.0001 s) to read an analog input, so the maximum reading rate is about 10,000 times a second.

Some Serious Pre Scaling and Conditioning would be in order I would think ?  A Just functional PI Detector can be had without any Conditioning but performance is akin to a BFO.

Here is your BARE BONES Arduino PI

Looks like a cool project Homie. As lomg as you have nost of them parts, go for it.

I am aware of those stats that you gave and that bare bones circuit is nothing more than a pinpointer which I  am not going to be using anyways. Not sensitive enough and is all metal mode. Built the PIC one from the guy in Estonia, and ended up with another pinpointer with an expensive hard to find processor.

No the originator of that circuit uses it for a detector.  I have the sketch if you would like to see what he did.  I bread boarded one and it works, but not worth  building for use to me.  I have a Mini Pulse Plus to assemble when I get to it.  Barracuda is done waiting for a Enclosure to come it's way.

SOOOOOOOOOOOO?   How you planing on doing your thing here ?  Once you get it worked out you could Program a DIP28 ATmega328P-PU MCU IC using a Uno and Shrink your project. down to Atmega,Crystal and Power .  Come right off the IC Pins for your I/O...    I think if you did it right you could even clock like three MCU off the same Crystal . That may help with your Serial Com I2c if your going to use it.

You know you can Clock your Arduino up to 20Mhz with a Crystal change?  If you don't change the Boot loader all your Program Timing Functions will by 25% but Eaaaa!

I just can't keep up with you birds!! Grin  Early 70s learned the CDP1802, went to the 6502. Tried some ATMega stuff but the programing interface at that time was either parallel or serial,of course by then i was off to usb and Apple. Have a little Win10 tablet with a serial port for my SDR toys. Maybe could get back at it with that.....
