Go Up Go Down

I saw a video on youtube where the range of a garrette pinpointer was allegedly increased by holding a coin to the pinpointer on the handle end, just outside of detectable range.  On the video this appeared to give the pinponter an extra 2 or 3 inches of range, however the video was zoomed in so tight that it could have been easily faked.  I do not have a garrette pinponter, I am considering buying one, and knowing if this could work or not could be useful in my decission to spend the extra cash.  Anyone tried this?

Very Unlikely I would have thought.
Garrett would likely as not increased the pinpointer range already if it were so easily done.
In my opinion it's absolutely not worth parting with quite large amounts of money for a "probe" which is more or less a glorified stud / nail finder.
If you have a P.I. detector it's Sooooo easy to make a probe yourself.
Or, make a simple p.i. detector, there are a few on here, and just use that as a "probe".
Should be able to knock something together pretty cheaply that will out perform any commercial unit.

Paul is right on one score. It's unlikely that doing as the video says will add any range.

The purpose of the probe is not to dig with it but to use it to isolate those finds which take on the color of the soil making them almost impossible to find. If you use your pinpointer to dig, you're asking for trouble. The Garrett probe is far and away the one with the best sensitivity already. Why do you need more?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

You have many good pin-pointers on the market out there to choose from at a very reasonable price , it does not have to be a Garrett . And anyway it sounds to me like the Garrett pin-pointer is defective or not factory tuned correctly , to stick a coin on the handle to increase the sensitivity ?
Id the coil on ferrite or plastic form ? Something sounds kinda-fishy here . Thanks for posting this everyone !!

good points everyone.  As for a cheap do it yourself unit I don't think I'll go that route.  I already cheaped out and bought the harbor freight (cen-tech) handheld unit which was 16.99 or under $15 with a 20% off coupon I had.  It seemed great at first but the more places I went the more frequently I seemed to pick up interference easily, requiring me to turn the sensitivity all the way down and then eventually it will just beep constantly even at lowest sensitivity until I leave the area.  After hunting with a pinpointer I don't want to go out without one, it takes so much longer without one and its quite a bummer when you just got out there and halfway through digging your first hole the pinpointer craps out.

The nice thing about a P.I. probe is that there is quite a bit better range.
(Around 3-4 inches) with a small coil wound on a bit of ferrite rod.
The signal tone will actually rise in tone until you are right on top of the object (about half an inch) where it will really "Sing".
Believe me, it WILL outperform anything you can buy.
I'm building a "stand alone" one right now.
Pictures and details when I've got it all running.......

I own a propointer and love it. As for the coin to increase depth i'm not sure but have seen videos on it. I really don't need the "extra" depth because that is what the metal detector is for. The propointer helps to target the item before I dig and then decide if I want to "coin pop" it or dig. Anyhow I suggest to get the garrett propointer you will not be disappointed.
