Hey guys.
I just recently joined thunting.com and have done a bit of research on DIY metal detectors and just wanted to make sure that a PI detector is the best bet for beachcombing?

Hi Nostradmus

Yes the PI will give you a good depth and is very good in water as long as the search head is well sealed you will have no problem . Which PI are you planing on building?

Regards Xavier

I am probably going to try the one by Mark Stuart or maybe even the Sandbanks MT. Going to check these next few days if I can get all the electronic components from my supplier or if I have to seach online. Still not sure how to properly waterproof the Search Coil though.  Smiley

For the coil just fill the casing with epoxy resin I make my own mould out of cardboard the inside has a thin layer of flour polish makes it nice and simple to remove once the resin has hardened but you must use epoxy resin if you use fibreglass resin it will shrink  by 7% and distort the coil also is the layer is thick and you have a bit to much catalyst it will heat up to such an extend that it will crack not to mention that should you try to handle it you will be burned the disadvantage with epoxy resin is you have to be very careful to have the correct proportions when mixing and you cant mix very small quantities but it will not shrink.

Thanks for the info dude. I will look into it.

I also looked at the Sandbanks component list and it seems a bit too difficult for me to work around the no longer made T1 Toko 87BX135 problem. I guess I will have to go with the Stuart MT.
